Hi all,

I need some guidance on temporarily wiring up (and cooling) an engine for break in.

The engine (350) and transmission (TH350) are sitting in a 1940 Chevy frame and we would like to be able to break it in before continuing with the project.

First question is on cooling. We have a radiator with an attached electric fan that we can mount for this. I have also heard of people just using a garden hose attached to the water neck to provide a constant flow of cold water for break-in.

Second question is on wiring. I know I will need to hook up an oil pressure and temp gauge (probably mechanical) and a (hand held) tach in order to monitor the engine for break-in. However, I am not too sure on how to wire the engine to start and run (I assume that I will need a universal 3 position ((off-start-run)) ignition switch). If someone has a schematic, or can explain how to wire it up I would be grateful.

FYI, the engine has an aftermarket HEI distributor and a standard GM alternator if you need to know that.

Here is a pic of what we are dealing with; the cab is now off the frame. Hey I know, there is a lot of billet on that engine, it’s not mine, I’m just trying to help a friend out!

breaking in an engine is best done IN the car,it needs to work against a load,or the cylinders just glaze up.then your rings don't seat, and you end up burning oil.you're better off waiting until you can drive the thing-george

Oops, I wasnt quite clear http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif. We just want to run it long enough to break in the cam; 20-25 minutes at 2000-2500 rpm.
