Chevy 292 questions???

Well after I smartmouthed on Yorgs post about how my Hudson was running I finally had to move it and guess what??? I finally got it to move but barely..Old motor is going to have to go so my question is what kind of auto trannys came behind 292 Chevy sixes? Thinking of putting an auto tranny in it so the wife can drive it too. What do you think of these motors? reliable? mpg? not looking for a total road rocket just something that will get out of its own way. Thanks.....

292 uses normal Chevy trans pattern. Any auto, 350, 400, 700R4, whatever will bolt straight on.

292s are bad sammiches, but mileage is usually pretty terrible out of them.
