View Full Version : Michigan Nostalgic Junkyard...End is Near...Closing Soon

I am sorry to say,but a yard that has been very low key for years is closing.Due to the high price of scrap, the owner is crushing all of the cars.He told me that scrap is over $100.00 a car,and due to some family issues related to the land,he needs to clean the place up quickly.
Here is the deal...when I started going to this yard about 5 years ago,it had just re-opened after bing closed around 1973.There were roughly 3000 cars in there according to the owner.I do not have any pics because he was taken advantage of by a guy taking pics and putting the cars on E-bay.There are a few other guys on here that have been to this yard and will vouch for me.
He is closing in 3 weeks, all cars will be crunched.A shame really.Quite a few trucks as well.Cars range from a 1937 Ford,to maybe an early 70's Impala and literally everything in between.I just passed on a 394 Olds engine he offered me for $50.00.A buddy of mine hauled the cowl section of a '51 Lincoln home Saturday for $50.00...torched out for him at that price. He is cheap.
I have kept this place a secret and only shared with a few friends thinking he would be here a while.I had no idea.
The yard is in SW Michigan, near South Haven. If anyone may be interested in a trip,I would be more than happy to bring you out there. He is only open Saturdays 9 to dark.
Send me a pm,or an e-mail to hotrodguy_32@yahoo.com.Would have to be for Saturday August 7.

Wouldn't be Joes would it... last time I was there in college (about 10 years ago) the old stuff was already dwindling away... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Cool place too. I live near Detroit and we used to make pilgrimages out there all the time.

Does he not want to sell the cars or what?! He would rather crush old iron than find buyers? Am I missing something?! Sell 'em off for $101.00 each and he's doing better than scrap. WTF? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Big A...he will sell complete cars, always has.He just recently got connected to the internet.A big family dilema is causing the demise of this yard.It seems that the family wants to sell all of the land thinking they will be rich. They haven't thought about it apparently,as the land has been a junkyard since the early '50's.We can only assume that some cleanup would be needed before you could build homes on the land.
I would love to see alot of these cars saved...time and money prohibit me from bringing a few home.Wish it wasn't the case.

Damn.... Thats enough to make a guy cry... If I was closer and had a trailer Id go in there with $4000 and walk away with 30 cars... It would be a lot better to see em go on the bay for parts then it would to have em be crushed... Thats the place that a guy dreams of finding...

Went with Charlie (Kustom) yesterday, Sat. Aug. 7th. An amazing yard, and it is a shame he is going out of business. Found my hood for my Chevy Panel Delivery truck and I plan on going back in the next few weeks to look at some other stuff! Charlie and I were the only two to go, would like to maybe meet a few more of you Michigan area HAMBers for another trip out there. Let Charlie and I know whats going on.

torched a cowl for a 51 lincoln huh...well...what about the rest of the car? Anyone whose been there see if there are other 49-51 merc parts? I can't drive out there which sucks, but if soem small pieces are available, we could make something work..

The end of a era is in sight, these places are disapering so quick. As urban sprawl grows these places keep disapeering,I found a pile out here, had alot of neat old stuff in it,it was just a farmers pile but had some good stuff in it,never could get in to it just look through the fence, went to look last month everything was gone 2-3 acres of stuff gone!!!!we need to let others know when we find this stuff,I know it's hard but we can't keep it all for ourselves,as much as we would like.

Charlie (KustomF100) is headed out this weekend, Saturday the 14th. Unfortunately I have to work so I will be unable to attend. I am attempting to plan another trip after the weekend of the 21st. Would be great to have a few more HAMBers meet up to go out there one of these times.

I am sure that there is at least one '59 Chevy moredoor out there.I will find out this Saturday how many more weekends he will be open. There are alot of cars left, and I have a feeling that he may be there a bit longer than he had first thought. What are you searching for? I could see if he has one.

i need new headlight rings for a 60 pontiac, hehehe....
every set I find are priced way too high, and both of mine are banged up from getting backed into. I've just been trying to not be annoyed by it too much. Ya don't have to go out of your way to find any, but if you happen to run across some I'd be greatful!

I need the crome fin peices just behind the rear doors. I will also need the sheetmetal below both the rear bumper and the front bumper. Any help is much appreciated! Chris http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

If there would happen to be any 41-46 Chev or GMC rear fenders that aren't too hammered, I'd be interested.
Thanks
