A friend of mine just gave me a 64 chevy 230 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Him and my dad are starting to tear it down for a rebuild. I was just wanting to know what the difference was between the 230 and 292? Is it just bore and crank, or is there something else? I was thinking of having them punch it out to a 292 if that was possible. Any comments, ideas, or just knowledge is greatly appreciated.

The 230 and 250 are brothers. The 292 is more like a cousin.
The 292 is a long stroke monster with a taller block. If'n you'll look at the side covers on your 230 and compare them to the ones on a 292, you'll find the 292 is much taller.
The head interchanges though, along with the manifolds too.
The 292 is a long stroke torquey bitch. There's plenty of 6 yard dump trucks around with 292s in them.
If you're serious about the 6 cylinder build, you really should buy Santucci's book "Chevrolet Inline 6 Cylinder Power Manual". It's worth the money, and will tell you pretty much anything you need to know about building one of these inlines.
