View Full Version : Who rebuilds F1 steering boxes?
I replaced the gear that comes on the steering shaft, what's that called, sector or worm? The other one looked OK, but obviously my box needs to be rebuilt, it's got more play than I'm comfortable with. Also one ear was cut off, so I need to get the same box back.
If anyone knows of prices, turn around time, I'd appreciate it.
BTW, it's a '48 F1, I think.

You might need to stick a picture up of what you have. There are no ears in the 48 F1 box.
I rebuilt my own - not that complicated. $260 rebuild kit -think it came from Dennis Carpenter. Included new shaft with new worm gear pressed on, new sector roller and all seals, bushings, shims, etc.
Nads -- If you'd like, I'll send you the inspection, rebuild, and service portion of the Ford steering book that Vern Tardel and I have been working on. Need your e-mail address to do that. It will be a rather long attachment, and if you can't open it successfully I'll send you a hard copy.
Mike that would be awesome, thanks.
my e-mail's nuk@k2services.com.
mtflat, it might be an F100 box, it had a triangular mount on it, but someone chopped an ear off. I had to custom make a mount for it, so a stock one won't fit. It says Gemmer on top of it and no other ID.
I bought the gear with steering shaft from Joblot up in NY.

Nads, It's not to hard to rebuild one if ya got all the parts, hell even I have rebuilt a couple of them. Here's an exploded veiw for ya.

Nads - F1 box = Small box with a fully splined pitman arm held on with a large nut - lots of interchangability of internal parts between this box and other late 30's - late 40's Fords.
F100 box = Larger box with a partially splined pitman held on by a pinch bolt.
They both have triangular mounts, but the F1 is small and pretty symetrical. The F100 is more "odd" and of course bigger. Hope that helped.

Sorry Nads, when you said you had a broken ear I thot of a pre-37 gearbox with a sector 'fork'.
Grimlock is right, and there is another difference between the F1 and F100 boxes. The F1 gemmer has the sector roller/pitman arm on top of the worm gear. I've heard the F100 gemmer has the sector roller/pitman arm below the worm gear.

Shiny, you ever shop at the old car centre down your way someplace? maybe they got the stuff? I been checking on some stuff from the states and shipping, customs, and taxes, and possible brokerage fees are a real kick in the head to get some measley rubber I need up here
I am gonna give them a call tomorrow and see if they got the stuff I need rather than asking for a nonexistant catalog
Shiny -- I don't know if the file is easily sendable. I've asked Nads to acknowledge if he's received it but haven't heard from him so far.

Shiny, I never did buy new parts, I just strip the good parts out of all my old ones http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Had the adjuster plate in one break into 4 pieces once and it locked that box up instantly, good thing it happened in a parking lot...
I thought Sacramento Vintage? had parts and DC? But like I said, I never bought new parts for one....Yet http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
