View Full Version : The Coupe Is Gone...Long Live the Custom!

Well, I swore up and down that I wouldn't do it. I would NOT trade my Five window for another car. I really need to pay off some bills and get some cash flow. I was firm in my conviction to finish the T-Bird as a mild custom and not start any other projects. This time, I told myself, I would stick to the plan. I am, however, weak. A trade deal came up through the classifieds that really got me thinking. Normally trade deals don't appeal to me. The C-dan was the exception to that of course. But alot changed from this past Thursday until yesterday. Grumpy (from the HAMB) contacted me about Bruce Bunker's son's car. the '61 Buick. There were a few things I dis-liked about it, but for the most part, it looked like what I wanted. The deal was made over the phone, and by Saturday at Noon, I was looking in the back of an enclosed trailer at a very cool '61 Le Sabre. I must be honest, at first sight my heart sank. My first reaction was not a positive one. For some reason the car didn't look that great. Maybe I had built it up in my mind too much? Maybe I was wrong in my instincts. I almost made them drive the 7 hours home without ever unloading the car. But I hadn't given the old Buford a fair shake. Something told me to look at it in the sun. So she was unloaded right there in the parking lot. Once the sun hit those House Of Kolors flakes and candies, I changed my mind. I began to notice all the work that went into the car and I decided to take it for a spin. The ride was nice. After being cramped up in the coupe, the '61 was a welcome change. Finally a car that won't kick my ass the whole trip there! Don't get me wrong, I love Hot Rods, but lately the cruising bug has hit me. So, we made the deal and off my Coupe went to Ohio where I'm sure it will get all the treatment I couldn't do. One more step towards the straight side. In case you haven't seen any of Bruce's cars, his "A" sedan is featured in the May '04 Rod and Custom. Its bronze and goes by the name of Lucifer. I love it. Anyway, enough of my yackin'.. heres a pic of the '61 at home in PA.

Heres another shot. You have to see the paint in the bright sun to appreciate it. Now I know why it costs more that House Of Krylon... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Judging from this thread and the other thread, it ooks like a nice trade! Personally, I would opt for the Buick, myself...I love that body style. Is that a yellow rear window?

Awhile ago I posted about a '61 that my buddy had at his shop just sitting around. I began to look at it with a custom in mind. What I saw then is what I have now in my garage. Finished.. Funny thing is, my buddy's '61 is still up at his shop sitting outside. Its getting rougher by the day! Think I may have a parts car... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Funny how a car will stick in your mind until it becomes reality. Mine happened the easy way!

Thats not a yellow rear window. The reflection from the incredible rear package tray (Bruce made it himself) is almost blinding. I may have to cover it so I can see out the rear view mirror!

Spike, looks like you did good, that's a beautiful car, and if both of you are happy that's all that matters. Is that a T-Bird interior?
Grumpy and I recently exchanged cars and I'm very happy. I've gone from a '29 tub to a '48 Ford coupe to a '49 Chevy Fleetline and I think I've finally found my "keeper", well for a while anyway. Who knows what tomarrow will bring. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
What color is that package tray?
I just bought some HOK Lime Gold Pearl for my scooter and
that looks very close.

Yes, thats a T-Bird interior!( '63-66) I can't belive I bought a whole T-Bird when I could have had just the parts I like in this Buick.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That Buick so rocks. When I saw the pics I wanted it. I'm jealous.... REALLY JEALOUS...

Beautiful car! I saw this car at Columbus last month and about spunked my pants! I think I shot half a roll of film on that baby- there's so much to see! I don't know what your coupe looked like, but IMHO you made a great trade!!!
Spike!
08-02-2004, 06:14 PM
I keep asking myself why I questioned the trade myself. It was weird..I suddenly gave it second thoughts. Then Grumpy pulled out that .45 Cal. and told me I had to, so I did.
For those of you who asked for motor pics, It doesn't have one. It just gets pushed from one photo spot to another. Thats the only down side. Luckily I live on a big hill.
I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I'm really looking to trade into a '72 or so Mustang that I can flat black and run an off color red wheel. Pure red is so last week.
As far as the coupe goes? I have complete faith that Bruce will make that car something amazing. He kicks ass. Looks as though his Son will be following in his foot steps as well.
the T-Bird? May be flying away soon. I have no need for two customs with only one garage. I have two people on it already.
Also, I'm looking to sell some of the paint stages on the Buick. I think it has like 5 or 6. I'll never use that many..Sounds like an E bay item..
Spike
that thing is fucking cool. what's up with those wheelwells??? is that a show car? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That is most definitely a show car, but it was driven to each show it went to. It's been driven through pouring down rain on the way to cleveland for Choppers and on the way to and from Lancaster for the KKOA show. Have fun with it Spike, I know I did. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I took Donzie's '48 to meet Grumpy when they traded cars and I thought how great it is to be able to trade cars and both parties being satisfied with the deal. Now, it seems, we have another "match made in heaven HAMB trade". Congrats to both of you.

I agree Frank.
Hey Brett, for he love of God, Please do a seperate intro before the heavens fall.
Everyone here likes to know who they're talking to.
Quick info from me. he's Brett Bunker, the previous owner of the 61 Buick that went to spike(hotrodphotos)and the son of Bruce, who is the owner/builder of Lucifer(the chopped/channeled A sedan that's been public lately)
Now go do one yourself!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
