View Full Version : Comp Cams
I'm running a COMP cam 280H in my T, Hydrolic lifters( Cam & lifter set).
No matter what i do or how I adjust he valves it sounds like i have Solids!!I've tried backing off till they clack & then tightening till they stop, the same thing with a 1/2turn tighter,Tightening till it stumbles then backing off till it runs smooth, Even 1 full turn after they clack. evrything & they still are noisey!!
The 2 odd things I've notice is that if i have them about even or 1/2 turn tighter then clack the oil just nicely flows out of the hole over the rocker But as i'm loosening them to "clack" when t starts the oil shoots out the hole about 3 ft!!
The other thing is that when you shut it off all the lifters seem to "release", they all kinda close the valves!!
looks like all the rockers just open up( or Shut)!1
Is this normal for this setup? I know its too much cam for the car but i got it for free & it has the Bddest cam lope you ever heard!!lol http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

COMP CAMS 280H = square pattern garbage truck camshaft! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
They make cheap performance cams...most of which are square pattern junkers...fine if you're running open headers and drag gears...but crap for a street car...you'll make more power with most STOCK cams!
Drop in a quality Crane or OEM dual pattern performance hydraulic cam with new lifters and you'll be impressed beyond your wildest dreams!!!

Hack, I'm going to call you on this one. I've used Comp cams for years and have got nothing but praise for them.. Their 268H grind is probably the best all around street cam I've ever used. Good torque, great idle, good top end, an all around good grind. We've put over 30 of them in various combinations here and every customer has given a favorable feedback. There are so many grinds out there from the aftermarket that the factory stuff is only OK if your unwilling to do some research.
My advice all along has been to get on the phone to these companies (free call), tell them what you are running, what you expect it to do, and don't play macho-man with you specs. These guys want to sell cams and related hardware that will do the job for you. They are going to give you good advice so you don't have a response to their products like the one Hack just gave. Most companies have done millions of dollars worth of testing and research, take advantge of it and pick up the phone.
This also applies to any problem you may have after the product is installed.

I dunno, Frank...some joker put a 270H cam in my old (Chevy powered) Pontiac before I bought it back...made the car run like SHIT! I went right for the cam because it was really the only thing different...put another 350/300 cam in it and was back in the game big time!
Not saying ONLY stock grinds work...I've been an advocate of Crane cams for years...sure they make their own single pattern cheapies...but I've always used their dual patterns and LOVED 'em!
In a small Chevy...you drop a big ol' Comp Cams stick in it...and most people will be happy with the "race car idle" and the way it sounds going throguh the gears...if you have nothing (but maybe a bone stock 350?) to compare it to, you'll be fine with it...I guess.
But, in REAL WORLD applications...street driven cars, a dual pattern grind works BETTER...especially where things like part throttle performance and exhaust systems come into play. Not only does it make for a more driveable package...it'll outrun the single pattern "catch all" cams in probably most every situation!
So, with Comp Cams...they're good enough for small block Chevys, I suppose! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

very good advice fab32, i have worked closley with comp cams , lunati and crane, for the last 25 years, am good friends with one of comps R and D guys, i have put about 50 of the 280 grinds in engines, have 2 in street cars now, and trying to get the one back from the rsffle engine from last year for a project i am doing for myself. never had a problem
i find it funny that last year the cam wasnt even comparable to a lawnmower cam according to the great gordini, [whatever happened to the that guy]
and this year it is a dumptruck cam http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
i think your problem might be in the lifter, did you use the correct spring for that cam?
by the way the raffle engine has the 268h grind in it this year http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

To confess...I actually ENCOURAGE some people to run Carter carbs and Comp Cams bumpsticks...
...those people being "anyone I may run against"!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
