Been hammered with spyware and popups. Anyone have a good source for removal tools?

spysweeper (http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/spysweeper/index.php) has a free trial version. You can update the definitions once for free. Works very good.

Try Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html) too. I use it and Spysweeper together.

I'm not surprised you can't download it, they've started adding that in lately. Are you running windows XP or 98? I'd go to the start button, then "run", and type "msconfig". Go to the "startup" tab, and check out what's loading when it starts up. In the "command field" you can get a idea of what is what... if it doesn't look like a program you know of, uncheck it. Restart the machine, and try again. If that works and you can get spysweeper or whatever on, then i'd check them all back on, restart, and do a scan.

Another vote for Spybot from me also...I had to get it several years ago to get rid of a tool bar my wife got stuck on the computer...it works great if you can ever get it loaded.

I run spybot, and adaware. Spybot helps keep the stuff away and block it, and adaware finds some stuff that spybot doesnt.

Looks like spybot and adaware worked just fine for me! Again thanks to the HAMB I am junk free!

Use Forefox for your browser and you won't have to worry about catching that kind of stuff....

I'll second (or third) Ad-Aware also... a real lifesaver. I didn't see the URL posted above, so here it is:

Best of luck!

Spybot will find and remove Spyware,
but doesn't seem to be very good at stopping it from coming back.

The latest Norton Antivirus 2004 is supposed to take care of all that shit,
if we can ever get the Fucking thing installed. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

go here:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php

if you want to get real hard core, find and download hijackthis.exe. that program will rip the nuts off any spyware program, and gets to the root of the problem. David

I am a bit challenged and just learning alot of this shit but I was told to get rid of outlook express and I E as they wer the easiest targets of virus due to the way they run or something. I went to Mozilla as a btowser on advice. I am srill using it but it is the free version and is clunky as hell and you have to give them $40 just to ask for any help. I had to have a new motherboard and hard drive installed and I haven't been able to get my mailbox imported back for some reason. And also now I can't open message windows from another place like a forum or something. (like the contact us button )

Hijackthis is the final, brute force method to remove spyware. That, and registry editing. However, both will literally destroy windows if you remove the wrong objects or edit the wrong keys. Ask me how I know. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The best method is to hit "ctrl" + "alt" + del", and see what processes are running. Then, google the names, and see what they are for. Most are Windows, a few are programs like Norton and such, but a couple will be some piece of spyware crap. Once you have a brand name, you can google that and probably find out what registry keys need to be deleted to remove it. You can also use Highjackthis and remove them like that. There's some new set of crap that came out in the past 2 weeks that the programs won't clean. The only method is regedit and highjackthis.

Not hard stuff to do, you just have to be careful.

Is spywareblaster and spyware guard any good? I have "AVENGINE.EXE" that I can't seem to get rid of. I also am running PANDA titanium for virus and seems to work real good for me.

If you are ever in need of free software or trial versions try tucows. They have anything imaginable along with ratings. Games, Firewalls, Screensavers, Internet Tools, you name it. Hope this helps in the future.....
