View Full Version : Couple of dumb SBC and Customizing questions....

I was thumbing through a SBC repair manual and saw the casting number listings. Curious, I found my motor and lo and behold it's a later 60's 327. Now for as long as I have had it, I was under the impression it was a 350 due to the long water pump. Did 327's come equipped with the long pump? I guess it's possible that the original owner configured it that way.....

Second question, I have been doing a lot of body repair on the shoebox and the more I look at it, the more I think the car would look better without the drip rail. Living in So Cal, I can stand the risk of little rain, but are there any other reasons not to move forward with my plan? Probaly gonna wack em' anyway, but I thought I'd poll the consensus anyway.

Yes.........the 1969 327's were long water pump (maybe 1968 too).

PRETTY sure my 68 327 had a short pump, from an impala. but it probably would differ per appilication. not sure on the drip rail, i've heard that SOME roofs have the top sheetmetal crimped into the driprail, if you cut it, the top comes off!

Short and long water pumps use the same bolt pattern. Either one will bolt right onto an SBC.

The switch over to the long water pumps was made in 1969 on passenger cars.

I'm thinking I don't. The car is getting every smoothie treatment I can muster, the drip rails stand out like a sore thumb, they're going...

Looks like my motor was either from a corvette or a Z28. Motor is from 68. T hanks for all the responses...

you can cut them off and weld up the seam. It makes a shoebox look funny though in my opinion. I had thought about it when i chopped my old shoebox (becuase it woulda been easier than reshaping the drip rail) but then i saw what one looked like witout it and that changed my mind REAL quick....I think there is such thing as being too smooth...

I think the 68 and 69 327s were the large journal which makes them the same basic block as a 350. Is yours an 010 block? ( the last 3 digits of the casting number on the bellhousing flang)

I don't know if it's been said yet or not, but I personally think that removing the drip rails makes the rear side window dealy look really messed up. It makes the door line really stand out. Just my slightly intoxicated opinion.

1. Short and Long all fit the same. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
2. You may want to weigh the coolness factor with the pain in the ass factor. I have a chopped F100 with the drip rails removed. When it rains, every time i get into it the body leans and all the water on the roof goes right down the back of your neck. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif Real fucking pain in the ass. (or back) and as above stated, if it aint chopped it tends to look really odd.
