View Full Version : Nailhead tranny options
I am need of some help. I want to put a automatic trans behind a 55 nailhead. Adapters I know are available for a th350 but are also pricey. I was wondering what year dynaflows would fit and what year is best(if any revisions over the years? any advice will be appreciated.
Do you have a 322 or a 264? Either way your best bet with that motor is to use an adapter and a open driveline. It's a little easier with the 364/401/425 because of the availability of the ST400 and SP400... I'm not a dynaflow fan...

i'm on the same subject. how about a trans for my 401? what trans would be good? what year ST400 & SP400 would be the best choice? i'm new to the Buick world.
oh yeah its a 62 buick wagon...thanks
i saved my money and bought an adapter to put a th400 behind my 364. im still not sure if the price for the adapter was worth it or not. not a lot of parts/engineering for what i paid. it does work though. i did that because i couldnt find a buick trans locally that would do the work. i have a dynaflow, but most people say they are just plain crap.

Looks like the adapter will be the way to go..$$$$$$$$$

For those of you running the 364/ 401 / and 425 you can use the 400 trnas from 63-66 Buick and will only need some minor starter and flexplate changes in some cases. (Dynaflow cranks) I disagree on the dynaflow. Although heavy; they are a good trans but nobody seems to do the maintenance. The 53 Caddy and the 57 GMC both used open drive dynaflows. If you use one get yourself a chassis manual and follow your maint. requirements and you will have no problems. Been running mine for 10 years now.

The 64-66 super turbine ST400 or 65-66 switch pitch SP400 are the best, but only bolt up to 364-401-425 engines. 264-322 have a different bellhousing bolt pattern, only option is an adapter, or the original dynaslow. Or run a manual trans, many of the early engines had manual so they are much easier to find.
