any body got tips on cuttin flat safety glass? doing a chop in august and trying to save as much money as possible so I can send the car to donnie at imperial customs. If i can cut the Glass myself that would be great since it is all flat. Any tips? couldn't find it in the search function.

As long as it is laminated glass all you have to do is get yerself a glass cutter and some cardboard or aluminum sheeet like .040 thick for patterns. Make your patterns to fit your new openings and then transfer to your glass. Cut the glass on one side with the cutter don't push too hard just enough to score it. Then grab ahold of it on each side of where you just cut it and bend it shoud begin to run on the cut where you just scored it. Then turn the piece over and just follow the cut on the other side with the glass cutter. Repeat the above process cutting and running the glass. Once you have it run on both sides then the fun part begins take some denatured alchohol and pour on the cut on one side and light it on fire yes I said light it on fire as it burns it will slowly melt the plastic film in between the layers of glass just bend the glass back and forth a little at a time as it is burning. When the fire goes out put on a leather glove and get a razor blade or box knife and run down the cut this will cut any of the lamination that didn't melt out of the way for you. If it is tempered glass don't mess with it you can't cut it.

That's a great tip. In 40 years I never knew how to do that. When did they go to tempered side glass? Seems like all the 60's cars I work on have it.

That will work O K on straight cuts, but curves are a little tricky. On a curve make a series of straight cuts until the basic shape in there. Use a wet sander to smoothe the edges. Pics of some glass jobs I'm now doing.........OLDBEET

Nice stuff. I hear you on getting your ass kicked by insurance companies. I refused to sign their contracts years ago and moved out of the mainstream. Just do old cars. I gross about 1/10 of what I did in the early 90's but working out of my home shop my net is only down 25%. This is my last year in the glass business. I got into a product brokerage company that earns me 6 figures out of my home and I don't have to work with the glass anymore. 40 years is enough for any one job

Well, there's one kid worth of college education. Just the glass alone for this thing has got to cost more than some of the completed projects up here...

Not sure when they went to tempered glass bu I wish I could figure out a way to cut it I have been in the glass business for about 8 years strictly commercial but if I could figure a way to cut it I would be a rich man.

looked to me like you had the answer you were looking for on the first reply.
.
just buy a cheap ass cutter, and practice on some scraps. go to any glass shop and the dumpster will be full. cutting glass is simple. it has no pores or grain. it is kind of like welding in reverse. You scribe a line and apply pressure to break it. like everything else its better with practice. I've been practicing for 39 years and still fuck up on occasions. turn the tunes off and listen to the wheel when you cut. use a consistant pressure and speed when you roll the cutter. if you are making straight cuts on flat glass you can break it on the edge of the table.
.
I cut glass for heavy equipment on the tailgate of a pickup on a piece of plywood for years, so I wouldn't have to make two trips to a distant location. the better your equipment is the more consistant you will be. there is nothing else to teach. if you want to learn practice, practice practice.
.
And lighten up, there are a lot of glass people responding to your post. if you need any more answers! ask a better question. HOW DO I SAVE A FEW BUCK AND CUT GLASS AT HOME? answer BUY A CUTTER, SCRIBE AND BREAK THE GLASS! now if you want to cut curved glass as in windshields there has been at least fifty pages of posts by amatures and pros on that subject. now can we go back to our hijacked glaziers reunion? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

heres the wind wings I just did on a 36 ford, Iwas given a cracked piece of glass, went to put it in and it looked like shit, so pulled both sides and fixed them at no charge rather than have one person think I did that kind of work. they needed to be notched for the brackets. I had to cut two taller pieces in order to have the brackets spaced right. this is just a small detail but it's what I enjoy about working on old cars
.
The one one the right was before http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif,the left side is notched for the brackets http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

(Hardware stores are cheaper)
on both sides
(cut one side break it, then the other side and break it. then as told earlier use the alcohol and fire)
and just snaping it? Or does that not work on the safety glass and only on house windows
(glass is glass! two pieces of house glass laminated with vinyl = safety glass that why you have to cut both sides, its two pieces of fucking house glass)
and shit.

Hey It has nothing to do with luck we're trained professionals LOL
.
Here is a photo of all the equipment that it takes to be a professional glass man. my table has 25 year old carpet (new when I put it on) glass pliers, straight edge and laying on a towel is an oiling glass cutter ( I used a 3 dollar flecther no2 for years)
and don't bother with the leg jokes http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif "I've seen better looking legs on a table!" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
