my friend Dave Crowner (a REAL old time hot rodder from back in the day) had this neat old German torch he bought at a yard sale. story goes, their son was in the AirForce and stationed in Germany and when he came home the torch came with him. no idea exactly how long ago this was.

so the thing is, i NEED a torch and Dave said he will make me a "GREAT DEAL" on this old setup IF i think i can use it. he told me to take it with me and see what i can find out about it and if i want it then we can talk price. he said it won't be much but he can't "GIVE" it to me.

anyway, the name on the knobs is "MESSER". on the blue knobs it also says "Sauerstoff" which i assume means "Oxygen". the yellow knob says "Brenngas" which i figure is "Acetalyne". also it has the arrows for open and close but one is labeled "A" and the other "Z".

the cutting head is reall cool and has a little standoff with steel wheels to help quide you and keep the torch steady when cutting. it has several welding tips and what appears to be a couple different cutting tips. there are some other parts that obviously don't belong to this set but they come with it.

so, anyone know what i got here and if it would be any good for a wanna be hot rodder who likes to play with the sheetmetal?? i'm mostly looking for one of these for welding and shinking and that sort of thing. it'll also come in handy when i need to heat things and bend them http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. i have the plasma cutter for cutting though i would certainly have to give the cutting torch a try just for the cool standoff/guide.

thanks for any help you can give me.

As long as the hoses will attatch to the mixer,it should work just fine.
Some of the o-rings might need to be changed, but they should be standard sizes.

i just think this torch is neat as can be so i hope it is a good one. if i had the gauges, hose and tanks i'd give it a whirl, but i don't http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif. it is on my B-day list though, and that is soon http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif..

check out Dave's old but trusty drill press. the patent date is 1903 and originaly was run by a large flat belt (like they ran from overhead in the old factories) but Dave used this old electric motor that his DAD originaly used to make his own table saw which he then used to build his own HOUSE!! all that is left today is this motor and it has to be OLD cause Dave is in his 60s and for his dad to have used it when he was a young man, WOW!

anyways, it has two speeds, a self feeder and torque out the ASS!! he said he drilled a 2" thick piece of steel with it one time and it went through like butter and he only had 3 shavings!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif what a neat old guy with more knowledge than i can even fathom...

messer means knife
binzel is a german torch and welding company going way back, it it all looks good and the hoses are not deteriorated , and the regulaters have been checked to see that the flow is correct, i guess you will have a nice torch

i'd love to own this drill press, but i don't think he'll let this go till he's dead and i don't even want to think about that so he can keep it!...

a future project Dave has in store... he was told when he bought it it was a 29 but it looks to be a 30/31 model A sport coupe turned roadster. i believe it is a Murray body cause the gas tank bolts in from under the cowl. pretty damn solid and a previous owner even chopped the windshield frame too. he is thinking of building some sort of split (DuVall style) windshield for it. he also needs a deck lid if anyone has one.

Nice Barnes Brothers drill press, they were made for such a long time, 1880s to 1940s, that parts for them still turn up. They usually need to be re-babitted.
I've worked in plenty of shop with them, pretty good machines.
A full-on resto with the forest green paint, gold striping, and all new gears is a pretty impressive thing.

That is a 1929 Cabrolet.

i was thinkin it would be a Cabriolet because it had a fold down top originaly. i don't remember the sport coupes ever having a fold down top. it still has the pins at the top of the windsheild for the top to hook to.

Looks cool.

Do you not have a buddy around who would let you try to hook that up?

And I did that drill press, looks hardly OSHA approved though!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Yeah, but I guess Messer could be the brand name too.

If you need anything special for your torch I´m pretty sure I can get it for you. There´s an old hardware store about 10 miles from here and they have almost anything for older tools like your torch.
BTW, "A" stands for "auf" which means open, "Z" for "zu" , closed.

Messer is the Brand . Later it has been changed to: Messer Griesheim .Today it is owend by an English company as far as i know.
I have a "Messer" Gas set up , too.
Mine is fairly new(90s).Good stuff.
Buy it !
How could you build a Hot Rod without one ??
You always need to heat, bend, cut something....

The cutting torch looks like it may be a bit awckward to use if you have to open the blue valve by turning to start the cut. Since it has the wheels and that ype of valve it may have been used in a cutting machine of some sort.

I thought the 29 cabriolet used the same cowl as the coupes and roadsters???

thanks for all the info. i prolly could go try em out at a friends place, i just have'nt had time yet.

Cadlights, i'll keep it in mind but that is the one thing on my birthday list is a gas welding setup. so i'm gonna wait till after my b-day (about 2 weeks) and see if i get what i asked for.

Buami thanks for the offer, i may take you up in it. prolly would'nt hurt to get a couple tips just to have them around. shipping from Germany to the US can't be a very quick thing and i'd hate to be stuck not ale to use the torch when i needed it. i don't know how i've gotten along this long without one. actually i used to have my dad's setup for a long time till he "repossed" it, and i used to use one at the college all the time.
