im working on getting going with a more "real" company encompasing all that i do into one big thing...from cars to bicycles to pinstriping to metal fabrication to art ...etc... anyways ive been doing stuff kinda as "PIKETOWN KUSTOMS" but i think that i need a new, more serious name thats not quite so hillbillish(piketown is the sticks) so ive been thinking for the past few weeks about what i may like and alot of things have come and gone in my head..today i came up with "3 SPEED Designs" i did a logo at work and played around with it a bit and then i got to thinking that it may already be in use...does anyone know of anything with this name...and also any other good names for a company...this has to be something thats as good on a hot rod as it is in an art gallery or something like that...any help would be appreciated

thanks
zach

If you're asking for opinions, I think Piketown Kustoms sounds cooler than 3 Speed Designs.

My 2¢.

The problem with 3-speed designs is that people DO judge books by their covers. What you need is something that says what you do. 3Speed designs suggests that you might be a design firm, doing architecture maybe, but more or less I'd assume it was a graphic design firm.

It sounds like you'll be doing a little bit of everything Hot Rod and custom related. You want a name that makes people who see the sign, your business card, your T shirts, etc. say "WHEN I NEED a (fill in the blank) I'm going to have Zach at 'Wide Open Throttle Hot Rods and Customs' do it."

If you use that name, you owe me lunch. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What does this company do ?

Piketown Kustoms sounds like you do Lead Sleds, custom bodywork and paint.
Could also include street rods and latemodels with air bags and fart cans etc.

3Speed Design could be a clothiong line,web designer,graphic artist,CNC/CAD Engineering.
In short, just about anything. This could work against you.

If anything...make it "4-speed (or Six Speed) Design...that'll tell potential customers you're up on everything new and hot (unless, of course, you want to stay old school in what you're doing). Use a "tag" line below, or alongside the name, listing a few of the more "popular" things you do: Bodywork, Metal Fab, Concept Art, Kustom Paint, Pinstriping -- get the idea? However, pick out only two or three so as to not inundate clients with everything you do...let them ask...gives you a natural opening.

Just my three cents...worked for me.

I think trying to create a "company" that encompasses everything you do just becomes confusing. also how far do you plan on legally taking this cause registering/trademarking a name can get real expensive real quick.

Zach, have you talked to a book keeper/tax man? When I started my business it was recommended to just use my name. If you use Piketown Kustoms,or others, you have to go through the ficticios name thing $$ In your advertisement you could say Joe Schmoe, specialising in bla-bla-bla. BTW, good idea, that way you can write off those Henrobs.

thanks everyone for the insight...i see piketown kustoms as too much of a "kustom car" name...ever since i was pretty young i had slot cars and things with "zach suhr engineering" on them...now im not an engineer but maybe i should just use my name and leave it at that...my dad said maybe file the name as "enterprises" then i can make up names here and there and say they are part of the main big company so maybe i will do that for filing purposes..its rough trying to come up with a more permanent name on call...all the others ive used in the past have just popped into my head and i went with it...didn't try to think of them

anyways thanks to everyone who added their few cents

3 Speed Designs kinda sounds like a 'tuner shop. Probably is taken, but Kustom Kreators sounds pretty good to me.

There is a Speed Design in Ill.

3 Speed Design sounds to me like it could be about British bicycles with sturmey-Archer 3 speeds...
But it definitely doesn't sound like a ricer tuner shop because they all have way more gears than 3!

I think it may be a mistake to try and be too "cute" with a company name.

Or maybe a little cute is ok...
