Hey gang,
If all goes well I'm hoping to get Faye painted over the winter. The problem is that I can't seem to decide what color/design I want. So... how about I tell you what I like/don't like and then you can show me some cool ideas in Photoshop...
Likes- flake, scallops, satin or shiney finishes (but not primer), Satin paints with shiny accents, Original 50's palette pastels, bright colors
dislike- any shades of brown or copper, most "earthy" colors, 80-90's hot colors that street rodders love like "teal" and "fuschia"
Right now I only have a couple of ideas... Candy red with a black (possibly flake) roof, a good original 50's light pink with a white roof.
Here's a pic to work with...
The car is getting lowered this winter. The interior is snow-leopard velvet which will go with anything. I'm adding teeth to the grill and have put lancer caps on it since this pic was taken. I have no plans for chopping the car and the visor is staying.
Thanks for your help!

not to be a dick, and i know you didnt ask for any opinions,,
but from the looks of "Faye" she looks like a real nice original car,,which are getting hard to find in that condition,. i personally wouldnt change a thing other than lowering it and a split manifold for that *rat-TAT-TAT-TAT* sound, but thats just ME> http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

No... you aren't being a dick at all... and the split manifold is already bought and paid for! puuurrrrrr....
I'm painting out of necessity... I've got rust bubbles on the bottom of the doors, rust on my drip rails, and spots around the windows. The pic hides the problems well, but there are plenty of spots that need help. The car was repainted with original factory laquer in 1981, but the paint today is dull and uneven. I've tried to buff it up but it dulls out again right away. I want to get the repaint done before my little rust problems become big ones.

To begin with, your rust bubbles are already big. They happen after the steel has rusted away from the inside, and are goin to require welding in patches to fix, yes, even the tiny ones are big on the inside. Just pull a door panel and look inside with a flashlight and your compact mirror. (Not being that way,,, wife gives me her emties so i can duct tape them to a stickk to look inside things, rig up a couple and you can eb=ven make a periscope!)
Next, you say you don't like Earth tones , stay away from pink, it's just another word for pastell beige if the red is was lightened from was any bit toward the orange range of colors.
I compute "earth as anything with yellow in it, so if you stick to the blue-purple/magenta-red range you'll get your colors.
Black flake is not that snappy lookin IMHO. How about red flake roof, black car,red scallops.Keep it simple. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I "kinda" already knew that about rust bubbles. Dad welds so the patch panels aren't a big deal. Overall my car is really solid and I want to keep it that way hence not delaying the paint.
Earth tones to me are all those bad 70's browns, oranges, mustards, olives, brick reds, etc. I was born in 72 and I saw enough of that crap in my childhood to last a lifetime. I'd be fine with some brighter greens, blues, deep reds, true yellows, etc.
I see cars all the time that look great in those colors, I just couldn't live with em personally...

I think she looks pretty classy in her stock colors. Maybe just brighten up the green some and add a little white or gold pearl paste into the clear coat to give it some highlights and do an off-white flake top if you really want to dazzle.

A little more green - like it would be with gold pearl in the clear.

Black with a red flake top was mentioned, so I figured I do one of those too:

Yep, that works too.
How about some subtle speedlines off the headlights? kinda lengthens the front fenders a bit.

Go with a cream color. Very classy, and lowering aint necesarry. But the exhaust is a must.

Stacey,
The cylinder head that you're using on Faye was probably once mine, so I feel my opinion here should be worth double the usual value, making it worth a whole 4 cents.
Keep it like it is or another factory color combination.
The picture you posted says "clean original" or maybe "restored original", so anything I would do to the car would be in the direction of "original mild custom".
See the common word here? Original.
It sounds like everything else (except for the fur) has been period mild custom stuff. Keep with the theme.
Ed
PS- I once had a good looking '53 that was a nice two-tone factory emerald green & white. Black & white looks good on that body style too.

Oh, how 'bout that. My '53 looked kinda like the second one Cleatus posted.

I like the second green and I really like the blue with scallops...
I dig the red too!

CLEATUS' second version nailed it... just brighten up the current colors with some gold pearl-ized clear and maybe flake the roof.
