Ok, so my buddy is looking at buying a
1988 Chevy Silverado with a 454, auto. trans.,
double-cab, long-bed, dually...
it's not a 4x4, it has 87,000 original miles,
and it's in really nice shape, clean interior etc....
What kind of gas milage should he expect..??
Does anybody have personal experience with such a truck..??
any information is greatly appreciated..!!!
Thanks alot..!! -Snacks...

The newer efi 454 are pretty trouble free as far as big blocks go. Not much goes wrong with them. Gas mileage? maybe 12, more like 9 or 10. Loaded or empty, uphill or down. Pulling trailer or not, it doesn't seem to make much difference to a rat.

Had one at work..........I drove it for 3 years.....
9 MPG................uphill or downhill, loaded or unloaded..9 MPG
I believe if you loaded it on a trailer and hauled it........for every 9 miles you hauled it..........a gallon of fuel would be gone http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I got rid of my '00 crewcab short bed 2500 7.4L (It was the same as the '98 body) last weekend. The gas sucked, it got about 10 to 12mpg with a chip and K&N filter. so without probably around 9 to 10mpg in stock configuration.
As for the truck, when it hit 100,000 the thing started having problems. fuelpump went out ($350 for the fuelpump, then the AC motor when out ($135) but since it was on low power when it the blower motor locked up, the control panel reostate when bad (another $145). There is a problem with GM trucks and intake gaskets leaks, mine started to leak, (my dad's did also) requiring an intake manifold gasket change., not expensive for the gasket but alot of work if you do it yourself (I was quote $700 by GM). The truck was great but becoming a money pit. I got lucky and tightened the intake alittle and got my leak to stop and then traded it in.

I ran a 454 in my 71 2wd blazer, headers, intake and carb rv cam 3300 pound truck and it got 10 mpg. I once got 12mpg by being ever so tender on the gas but could not stand driving like that. I miss the torque but I no longer fill up twice a week!
Damn, I get that kind of mileage in '75 Cheyenne! I even swapped the ring & pinion to a 3.08, and it still sucks gas like a pig. Something's wrong with that setup...

I have a '02 3500 with the 502 and the allison trany and I am getting something like 12 mpg. My '99 with the 454 was worse. I drive mine evert day but then I only have a 12 minute drive to work.

I've got a '90 SS454 short box and I was getting about 9-10 MPG. Had a 700R4 put in and the mileage JUMPED to about 12+ but I tend to use my right foot too much. The big plus with the 700R4 is the engine RPM. These things come from the factory with 3.73 gears (way too much for a big block IMO) and they just scream on the highway at 70+MPH. Now with 30% of the RPM gone it just loafs along at 70.

My 92 dually is the same as the rest reported: about 12 on highway, 8 around town. Loaded pulling a car trailer is 9.5 on the highway. One difference is that I also have a whipple supercharger on mine, but to be honest it really didn't affect the mileage much from the stock configuration. Also put headers and free flowing exhaust on mine. Still uses a lot of gas regardless.
You don't have a 454 and dually for gas mileage.
