I started on a 650 triumph motor that i picked up last weekend and almost all of the primary bolts are stripped...i'm talkin stripped i got one off by notching it with a dremel but some of them are sunken in..i really don't want to have to drill these bolts out http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif anyone got any suggestions?? Without seeing it,consider welding larger nuts onto the heads of the bolts.
Then use a wrench on the new nuts to remove the bolts.
Spray the primary with antispatter spray before welding.
If you don't have any antispatter spray, use liquid dish soap.

if those are the philips head style screws you need an impact driver which you can get at sears or similar, should be $10-15.

yeah they are the phillips head style...will the impact driver still work even if they are pretty much rounded?? unk thanks for the tip.

if you use a big enough hammer http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif seriously though, you need at least a 2 pound hammer to smack the impact driver with, and watch your fingers!

Oohh I've used one before (looks at thumb http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif) i just didn't think it would work in this case..i'll give it a try

If the "cross" is completely destroyed the impact driver probably won't work. The impact may loosen the screw enough to us a locking plier to remove it. Those stripped bolt thingies from Craftsman might do the job if they are available in smaller sizes. The old memory might be flawed, but they seemed to have cost around 29-49 dollars per kit.
I've done the slotting technique. It works better on old Brit and American hardware than old Asian stuff.

yeah i tried the slotting technique but...some of them are sunken though so i can't get the dremel in. even some of the tranny cover bolts are stripped too...this guy must have put them back on with a freakin impact gun.

I got a broken off bolt out of a engine a couple of days ago.
I did it exactly the way it was explained right here on the HAMB ( first weld on a washer, then a nut ), and it worked great, the bolt was even broke off lower than the surface.
but you still have the heads there, so you could try this first.
Take a very sharp center punch and punch a dimple as far as possible to the outside of the bolt head as you can with out damaging the aluminum around it, lay the punch as flat as you can with out the sharp end coming out of the dimple, and hit it with a hammer again.
You should be able to feel/see right away if the bolt starts to turn a little, you will probably have to make a second dimple opposite of the first one , because the bolt will want to tilt and bind...
Or ( this might be the easyest ) just drill the heads off the bolts, slide the cover off, and then take the stumps out with some small vise grips...
you also can try some valve grinding compound on the tip of the screwdriver when you try.
this might also be a good time to ask if you know about "whitworth" threads?

use a little heat and a impact screw driver

Metalshapes..thanks for the tips. i'm gonna try the punch today if that doesn't work i'll have to break out the welder.. Ray yes i know about whitworth threads. thanks everyone else for the tips http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

There are good ones, and there are ones you wouldn't toss at a dog. Get a good one and they're a great tool. You have to hold it tight in place, twist it a touch to take any backlash out, and give it a good solid whack with a heavy hammer, so the whole handful of tools don't just rebound off the bolt.
If the slot/cross is rounded out entirly try popping a new slot with a small flat chisel. Loosens the bolt up a bit too http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

From what I read it looks like they are phillips head bolts (meaning they are smaller?)
And you're probably removing them from something aluminum?
I would douse them all in liquid wrench and let them sit overnight.. then I'd use screw extractors (bought at sears or any auto store)
Some mild propane torch heat might be in order to move things along.. but I'd take it slow and easy.. I hate stripping out aluminum stuff.

They are "old school" (as in 1800's old school) british threads that have a different profile than unified and metric threads...

If I recall correctly, it's a thread protocol, like SAE or Metric, 'invented' buy Sir Whitworth?? </random knowledge>

On striped screws I grab them with some dikes/side cutters/wire cutters.
