Hi, I'm new to the message board so he goes my into. I'm from Richmond VA and I love all the old the east coast rods and stuff. I've been collecting random parts and shit hoping one day I can build an old model A, like a 30 or 31.

Now what brings me here is I have an opportunity to buy a 21 stud ford flathead, transmission, and rear end from a guy dirt cheap. I's all out of a 37 ford. I went and looked at the motor and it looks real good. Apparently it was rebuilt a year or so ago by this old racer before he died. I know everyone is after the 24 stud motors, but the price is right on this one. What I wanted to know is if it's worth it? Does anyone know much about these things, because this will be my first flathead project. On the bellhousing is cast "O237" and there's a "G" under it. Then stamped on there is i think "IO-3453297." The tranmission has a cast "78" on the left side, which I understand is a pretty good case. I think I might get it, but i just wanted a second opinion. Any help would be great

Hello, and welcome. If the motors good, and like the unusaul, use it.Parts are harder to find for the 21 studders, and you will pay more for them. My advise- If you get a good deal on it,buy it, then resell to a restorer. Then if you really want a flathead, you will be happier getting a 24 studder. There are more parts availible, lower cost, and more power can be had. Good luck, and I'm sure you will get other opinions! Glenn

Welcome.

Here's a great resource for Flathead info:

I'd go for it. You may be the only buyer in town for that engine, so that good price could get even better if you haggle a little bit.

Well, I have been running a 21 stud for a year and a half now. It doesnt have power of the early 50's 24 bolters but runs very well with two holleys and advancing the vacumm brake. I also have a 50's flatty in the works.
Exactly what is "a good price". Has it been rebuilt with Papers to prove it? I would at least pull the heads and oil pan to check it out. Look for hairlines and possible bottom end wear or slop. No, you can't find any hotrod parts for these, I have yet to see a 21 bolt aluminum head for sale anywhere. If you have money to spend, I would throw it at a later 24 bolter. The aftermarket parts are much easier and cheaper in the long run. Welcome to the Hamb!
