For the old farts (like me) on the message board, what did we call the pipes that were popular in the early 60s, the ones that were about 3' long, chromed and belled at the end, that attached at the rear of the mufflers and extended slightly downward stopping about even with the rear axle.

All I can think of is "cheater pipes" right now. There was a popular name for them at the time.

I remember them being called "danglers" sometimes. Usually they were scavengers though.

I know they can be made into a chrome steering column. That little flair fits under the steering wheel nicely........OLDBEET

Well, my Dad grew up in Omaha in the 50's, he calls 'em "cackle cans."

Crestliner,

Yes, I believe that was it, scavenger pipes! Had a set on my 56 Plymouth. Thanks to you and the others responding.

The mind is going, going, but not quite gone.

Mike,

That's the ones! You must have scrounged through your magazine/catalog collection.

I see your SJ address. I got my scavenger pipes put on at an open-air muffler shop on ECR in Sunnyvale. Lived there at the time. At that time my entire tool collection fit in one little tool box. Power equipment consisted of one 1/4" electric drill. Those were "down to basics" days.
