Her is a dumb question-How the hell do you get the front nut on the drivers side of Rochester 2bbl base tightened up?
I noticed that on some factory cars they leave that nut off and not even a stud there???

Hold the carb part way down over the stud, tighten what you can as you lower the carb onto the manifold. Then reverse the procedure and install the base gasket you forgot to put in the first time! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Carbs after the early '70's got only two bolts--two barrels, that is, Two barrel of this type last used in '79, I think.
Best source: EARLY edition of Doug Roes Rochester book, out of print now. It covers all the early one, two, and four barrel Rochesters from about '49 up in excellent detail, including performance modification. The current edition of this book has very little on the early carbs, and is really a Qjet manual.
Early book is 1973 with 296 pages, other is 1980's with many fewer pages.
