I tore what I thought was a last year 1968 Ford 289 down today for some freshening. The bizzare part is it is actually a 302. Now I realize the 289 was discontinued half way thru the 68 model year and the 302 started half way thru the 68 year.

Could this have a factory 302 block with 289 heads? The block is a December 67 date code.

Just plain wierd - wont matter because I am putting a set of 69 351W heads on it anyways!

OH my god. Did somebody actually say that about a 289? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

289's Kick ass.

I've read where the factory had something screwy going on during that period where some of the stuff might be marked one thing and be another.....

Not so weird. I'm runnin a pair of 289 heads on my 302. They were the only things worth saving on my old 289 (a march 1966 block). Better heads for what I needed than the 302s.

I always thought the 289 and the 302 had the same block... I have a late 68 mustang hipo 289... but it hasn't been tore down since my senior year in high school (1982) so I don't rightly remember much.

They did do some mix and match with the blocks at the factory as the 289 was being phased out and the 302 phased in. The blocks are interchangeable, so it doesn't matter.

The easiest way to check whether yours is a 289 or 302 is to look for the a 1M or 2M marking on the crankshaft. 1M=289 and 2M=302.

I'm pretty sure the Kellog's gasket is not a factory item.

Newspaper is thinner than cardboard, keeps the compression ratio highter. I shouldn't be giving away all of those SBC power secrets. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
