Myself and about a dozen guys are going to Detroit as we do every year for the event. We're going early, though. Is there anything happening Thursday night? We also usually go to Pontiac on Friday night, is there something better to check out?

I told them I'd ask some locals. These guys are my dad and brothers and a bunch of my dad's buddies, so I don't wanna get in trouble! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thanks

ANYPLACE on Woodward Ave will be hopping from early afternoon on Thursday right thru till about midnite and the festivities will being first thing Friday morning.

If I was going to be in town I would be hanging out at the Red Coat Tavern right across the street from Duggans at 13 1/2 mileon Thursday. They have great food and plenty of parking out front. It will be bumper to bumper with classic cars cruzn all nite on Thursday.

Friday we usually start out in Birmingham checking out all the Ford cars and having lunch at Max and Erma's then head out for a day of cruzn and catching up with buds. We then make sure we are in the 12 mile area by 5pm cuz the parade that leaves the cematary right there on the corner has more the 700 cars that start to stage for the parade that leaves at 7pm and cruises WEST bound on 12 Mile.

From this point on it's bumper to bumper anywhere you go.

We haven't gone into Pontiac for the last 3-4 years cuz there is just no where to park unless you pay and we really want to be out cruzn Woodward Ave anyway, not parking and sitting.

A group of us will be out on Wed nite, the nite before we leave for the HAMB Drags so if you come into town early PM me and we'll makes plans to hook up on Woodward.

Have fun!

Woodward will be happening all week long from Friday the Aug 13th, right up until the actual cruise. Any place between Downtown Birmingham and the 696 expressway there will be parking lots with people in them, hanging out

My sentiments exactly.

I don't know of specific areas to shoot for except for 13 mile and Woodward, a big parking lot that usually has shows almost every day of the week; & Duggan's Irish Pub; but I do know that:

They've already started crusing.

Pissy commentary coming up, if it bugs you, DON'T READ ON.

For those of you on the HAMB that have no idea what we're talking about here, the Woodward Dream Cruise is probably the biggest one-day stretch of cruising that goes on in the entire country. Spanning several cities & many miles from Pontiac to Birmingham, the famous Woodward Ave. is host to probably the largest colleciton of cars, (everything from 2003 Escorts to 1919 Mack fire trucks); that cruise in the same stretch of road for one day, at the same time. Last year there were over 1 million people in attendance.

I thought it would be the ultimate place to live, in Royal Oak...a few short block from Woodward...once a year this gearhead would be surrounded by like-minded people for the biggest car show/cruise on earth! Since I moved here 3 years ago, I've taken two cars down there...for a total of 1 hour. The 396 BB in the Chevelle didn't like to idle in 85 degree heat, so that was a short wait-in-line-to-get-on Woodward and then-turn-around-and-go-home trip. The Thunderbird unexpectedly couldn't handle the heat after idling for over an hour...

It has it's faults (the cruise), which have consequently become worse with time. How a bunch of teens in a rusty 1987 Ford 4X4 pick-up truck, waving a confederate flag full of "piss on...Calvin" stickers; and blaring Kid Rock can be considered a part of a "classic car" cruise for "classic cars", is beyond me...but it happens. Very regularly. It gets to the point where if you stand in one place long enough, you'll think you just saw the last 10 years worth of hot-rodded American wannabee's, followed by the usual "I have a giant wing on my car, neon lights, and rims I had to mortgage the house for" type cars go by.

It's already the last week in July; head up there now on a Wed. night, & there's a car show somewhere. The actual cruise, IMHO is best observed Wed, Thursday or Friday night BEFORE the actual DAY OF. Real cars are out there driving around. Cars WE want to see. Muscle cars. Classics from the 50's. Rods. A and T bones. It's sort of the un-official Woodward cruise, but you can actually still get up to about 35 MPH and not destroy your car. Day of? Expect to say a lot of "What's THAT guy doing in the cruise?" followed by the usual 4 cyl single exhaust rap of a glorified lawnmower engine in a Honda.

If you live a couple miles from Woodward like me, you'll stay home...or if you feel left out, you'll WALK down there and try to see some of the MESS on Saturday. If you live within a few blocks of Woodward, you may as well put your life on HOLD for the weekend. It's quite a mess. Trying to run to the local supermarket across Woodward turns into quite an ordeal.

It was cool 10 years ago, but like everything else, it got TOO big, TOO commercialized, and you can't move cause it's SOOOOOOO overcrowded. I myself don't see the point in ruining my engine, because I move at 2 MPH for 15 blocks...in 85+ degree heat. Oh, and the minivands and Lumina's mixed in with the cruise with families inside looking like "Hey-Wha happened?" are a nice touch to block your view of the real cars you came to see.

I speak from experience. A car I took up there had a trans cooler, a HD radiator and the appropriate thermostat. It ran way under "norm" in driving conditions...well, on a year I took it to the cruise...at dusk...mid 80's heat...after an hour of not going more than several hundered feet, I had to bail, the temp gauge was reading way over what I knew was acceptable. I don't know how most guys do it. This was an all stock 302 with NO mods except for exhaust. If that can't make it, I hate to think of what a BB would endure...

If I were you, I'd park somewhere and walk around...watch the other people destroy their cars...

But what do I know? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I know what you mean. The traffic is bad, real bad. It's sponsored by Eaton, where my mother works so we get tickets to the booth. I have been going for maybe 5 years, every year I say I am going to drive one of my cars up, and every year I change my mind for the better. It's still something to see, you can't argue with it. What a circus! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That was a million people, and the power was out until a few hours before Saturday. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I went last year, but this year I'm going a week early, so I can catch some HAMBers in town, the WDC is the same weekend as the HAMBdrags.

This is your official warning, if Fat Hack knows where you live, you are fair game. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif We may be stopping by.

Hmmmm....lets see, I think the HAMB DRAGS is that same weekend.

I think I'll go there instead and have a GOOD time.

Last year I was in Bonniville. Yup you guessed it, I had a GOOD time.

I've been every year since the first one...it continues to get gradually worse in the types and quality of cars that are actually "cruising",...the best way to look at cars is to walk.

The Broken Cruise is turning into a great show for HAMB style cars, it's the weekend before the Official Woodward Cruise.

It looks like I may have to miss Woodward this year tho, we're planning on going to Memphis for the drag races, and to pick up all my T coupe and touring bodies that I got from Ryan,(Tcoupe).

If you want to go to a decent bar with a good atmosphere go to The Shamrock on John R. it's about a mile off Woodward and there's always "like minded" people there. Of course I live within walking distance so I'm partial. Also if any one needs a place to stay I have a spare room and plenty of space. Not to mention a lovely high school parking lot just right for tailgating http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I usually park in Ferndale.. it's quieter.. a little nicer, then I do a lot of walking, not a lot of driving. It's insanity basically.

I talked to Jeff and Jime' today,...the Broken Kruise is still going to be at Electric Superstition Tattoo, (there was talk of maybe moving it to a larger location), and will be on SUNDAY, August 15th. As soon as the art work is done, I'll post it, and all details on a new thread,...same deal as always, TRADITIONAL style hot rods, customs, and bikes only in the shop parking lot, everyone is invited, but HAMB style sleds get preferred parking.
