have an aluminum powerglide behind the 283 in my '65. sucker whines in park and neutral, appears to not whine at all in drive or reverse. sounds like it's coming from the front of the trans. does it sound like i have a bearing going out of her?? it drives fine, doesn't slip or anything like that, if it uses any fluid, i sure can't tell. any ideas???

shit, if it is that front bearing, how much of a bitch is it to locate a new one and change it????

that's what a friend of my dad told me, and the cast iron jobbie in my buddy's 60 nomad does too. just kinda freaked the hell out tonight is all. over the next couple of days i'll be putting a new 283 in, and tonight will be the last night i can cruise for a few days, so i headed out. comin home i heard almost a freakin whistle and thought of the 'glide first. wouldn't you know the sound only occurs when it wants to...

i'm pretty sure my alternator is on its last leg though, popped the hood and listened around. it vibrates pretty bad and sounds like gravel is churning inside when it sits at idle in gear, makes a dry bearing sound in park or nutral. i'll replace it, and probably the water pump too just because i ought to if i plan to drive this car daily till snow flies.

i've heard pretty growly alternators before, never heard one whine that way. thanks for the input, man.

you mean hydraulics? nope. it's dropped up front, but i like scraping my headers FULLTIME because the chicka-chicka-chicka exhaust leak makes me look TUFF. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

One of the reasons I LOVE my powerglide is it's whine in park and neutral. They all whine...

seriously, if it quits whining, start worrying.
it doesn't feel good.
all glides whine.

btw cheaterslick, turbos don't.
might wanna start by changing the filter...

filter's brand new, when we pulled the engine and trans out of the donor car we made sure to do that. so whining is good, not whining is bad. weird. good deal.
