After looking at Ryans back pain post a couple of times, he has nailed some of the thoughts rolling around in my fat head. I am certainly not saying this to just be a blind follower, but I have been wondering where are we heading with trends?
Rat rods - man is this term burned out. I even saw a tuner on EBAY termed rat rod.
Will the "trend" (and I hate that word) head towards some of the amazing 60's Kustoms next?
While I am currently building a traditional 29 Model A tudor, the future projects are lining up in my head like a staging area at the HAMB drags!
Here is a few of the types of projects I have swimming in my sick head:
Something like Plowboys Kustom Pickup:

Definatly a little modified like this:
http://img55.photobucket.com/albums/v168/levisclassic/rods/modified.jpg
Or maybe a killer little home made roadster:

I would love to build a great little track roadster

or this:

Its a sickness!!! Where do you start? Where are we going?

No two of us will go the same direction so whatever direction ,it will remain interesting, as a result.
Change is bad and change is good.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I know how you feel about project backing up in your head.
I could name 5 right off the top of my head and probly 15 if I thought about it.
I think everyone is like this, how could you just like 1 car?

Hmmmm, from what you showed us, it looks like you are gonna stay w/ the traditional scene for a while. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I to have a list, and am backed up. I promised myself I would finish my '57 Buick first and then my truck, but I've been sacking away parts for my all Buick roadster build. And after Ryan's post I've been seriously changing the plans I had to make it more of a modfied meets 30's european kinda thing. Not sure yet what's gonna happen but it'll definately be neat. It makes me wish I could draw better so I could render it first.

Those of us who really know whats going on,will never follow"trends".We build what we like, and let the others follow,if the want http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Glenn

I sure hope folk follow the old adage: "form follows function" and we don't get too many guys building total oddball creations JUST to be different. I don't mind oddball if they serve a purpose, but wierd for the same of shock value looks plain awful!
The way the UK government seem to be heading with their latest offerings of regulations and inspection, we'll be lucky to have a rod scene in ten years http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

We as a group have to stop thinking of this as a trend. We know this is a way of life for us. The current things going on in our hobby I believe is from more light being shed on what we do. There are alot more "traditional" shows going on, than in the past, more coverage in major mags, more mags that are geared toward our stuff, etc. So there are alot of people being exposed to this. Some people will embrace this and some will jump on the "bandwagon". Take me for example, I grew up liking hot rods and always picked up those types of mags when I could. I got into muscle cars when I wanted a V-8 car, so my dad told me to get something with one already in it, sans my roadrunner. Then I discovered HRD was coming out, that flame inside picked up once again. I found this place thru Aarons site and joined. I think as a group we need to take everyone that has a fledgling desire under our wings and help them. Those that truely desire this will stay and embrace this, those that don't well good luck to them in what ever they desire. The stuff they got while in this "trend" they will unload and we will be there to scrape it up. Sorry for the long ramble but thats my thoughts. Maybe I'm talking like a man with a paper asshole, I don't know. later plmczy

Well said.....I also believe one of the things that drew me to this sight is that everyone has a lot of different ideas and they are not afraid to mix it up a little. Traditional is one thing but I think a lot of people here a building what they want not one someone else has "termed" the new wave. Remember "dare to be different", Pro Street, Real Street(I have had this on my license plate since before it was cool from the rags), etc. All these set the stage for a chapter in rodding history. Trends or trend setting is there for the guys that build - and want to build - Ridler and AMBR winners.
There is no reason to worry about the trends if you like what you are building. I have always liked off the wall stuff. Unfortunately a lot of it has made it to be really cool and the price of the cars is way up(ie station wagons).
Live and enjoy...build what you want because YOU want to. No one else matters. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here - here Stoggie!
This whole post is kinda a poke at the word "trend." What I was getting at is the fact people are building what they think they like as opposed to being open minded and creative and building what really makes them happy.
I was just flipping thru some 50's and 60's magazines late last night and was wondering if these "followers" will follow the "trend" going from the 50's into the wacky 60's and the stupid 70's with rods. Will it follow (theres that word again) or repeat history?
For me I'll build what is in my head. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I understand what you're saying, but the examples you provided are all "normal" tradional (w/ the exception of the hand-made roadster).
I think what Ryan is saying is that someone needs totally deviate from the 30's/40's/50's/60's ideas we have of what traditional was. To push the envelope into a whole new realm like in the pic.'s he provided.
I'm telling you, coach built cars like only Cole and a few others can turn out would be the deal man!
This really is what's happening w/ cats like Jesse James in the bike scene. He's fabbing everything except the drivelines himself. It could be done w/ cars...just not by me http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

for a Long time I always wanted a flathead powered Traditional pre war Roadster...
till about 2 years ago when I just started to see allot of repition
of the same style...But only a handfull of 60's style Rods ..you
figure Cali would have a little of everything...It was'nt untill I flew
out to Wisconson and Saw the BLeedster and Bobs green car that
I was sticking on the 60's style...When I saw the Bleedster ..It had everything that I was imaginig in my lil head a year ago...So for me
"THE MADSTER" is Late 50's Early 60's style...With Nice Paint, Floors.
Chrome and allot of attitude!!! 60's is going to be the new Flat black...
I'm actually thinking on building an 80's Light green and Pink roadster
with heartbeat pinstriping....Sweet...

So your saying we have to expand our horizons a little, think outside of the box so to say? I think building a car from scratch is cool and I wish I had the skills and tools to do that. later plmczy

Fads and trends will come and go with the wind,
and the fickle "taste" of the buying public looking for the latest fashion accessory.
True Classics, and examples of good design, will remain timeless.
