I've been laid up recovering from foot surgery, so I have had time to surf the HAMB and paint. I've really gotten into that vintage sprint car thread. Those stories are amazing and the old photos are inspiring. I'll start it off this week with one inspired from there...

IT'S FRIDAY!!!
...somewhere.
Here's a couple different angles on one I posted last week (hope you're not sick of it...)

These next few can also be seen entered into the Art Challenge thread---
This one is the Mako-Meteor's original concept sketches. It is believed this car was never actually vissualized 1:1. ( the "sharks fin" seems a bit much tho does recall some styling cues seen on a couple Pontiac concepts of the late 50's era)
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m45/jigger_01/Mako-Meteor-02.jpg
The next is called the Jupitor...
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m45/jigger_01/Jupitor-2A.jpg
Note the injected 327 routed through a 4x4 transfer case into the '63 Corvette rear end.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m45/jigger_01/Jupitordetail.jpg
I know I know, this truck is not what is considered a "traditional Hot rod" I designed this for a select group of guys with this year model truck. I am thinking about converting the stripes to flames.
http://www.zumografx.com/files/74.jpg
By the by, what do you call a modified truck of this year or any year? I have always just referred to them as "Hot Rod Trucks". Anyway, just wanted to post it for my "digital lines" I laid down.
everyone check out the art challenge before it's over!

My Father-in-law worked for his Father-in-law at a gas station in SoCal here in the 50's and 60's. Over the years he has given me some pretty cool tools and stuff. Well last weekend I was over there and he pulls these out of the rafters! They were never mounted! I framed them up, sorry about the glare.

Never Neverland...
That's what this one is about.
I never went to Texas, never saw this car in the flesh.
But... when I flipped to page 28 in the August 1962 issue of Car Craft
I knew what my next rendering would be. This car, with its American Bantam
body, GMC 4-71 supercharged flathead and Vertex magneto, exemplifies
the true hot rodding spirit. Build something cool and see how fast it will go!
The Ram Rods Auto Club of Dallas, TX, once ran their exquisite creation
down the strip at Green Valley Raceway. The car still exists but is in sad shape.
Green Valley is now a housing project.
Special thanks to HAMBers, "The Fidgiter" and "Scrape"
who furnished reaserch which allowed me to finish this artwork.
I couldn't have done it accurately without your help.

Nice looking show thus far, keep 'em comin'!
I have a couple ideas rolling around in my head for t-shirt designs. I wanted to see what folks thought here.
First off, a 1932 Roadster:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/keven_carter/32-2.jpg
Second, a 1940 Ford:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/keven_carter/40-ford.jpg
(I may drop that 1940 Ford a little more so it looks a little more slammed than this mock up. Ideas?)
I'm still considering placement ideas. front design, or should it be a back?
http://car-n-art.com/Images/32T.jpg
lemme know what you guys think

01-31-2008, 01:18 PM
I like the shirts a lot. If you slam the 40 you may want to keep the as is for sale to other classic car lovers. That look and convertible is a pretty popular car and may sell on other forums or to a different market than here. I'd buy one of each!
and just my .02 but I really like the 40 how appears to be as one with the rest of the artwork. The 32 looks like it would fit better if you put it to the right of it facing into the artwork. Again just my opinion...nice work!

I wished I was the one who did this artist drawing, but I'm not.
I saw it on H.A.M.B a while ago and copied it. It is a drawing of
a chopped '57 Buick station wagon with a surfboard on top at a
surfer's dream beach. The more I looked at it, the more I liked it.
As I have a chopped '57 Buick 2-door hardtop, I kept wishing this
was the same model. I decided to convert it into a 2-door hardtop, but the only computer program I have similar to Photoshop is
Photo Impressions (it isn't much.) So I used "clone" and "smudge"
to convert the artist's drawing. I must apologize to the artist that
the quality of his drawing was downgraded when I did my work. I
think of him as an artist and myself as an amateur amateur. I
now use the revised drawing as my computer desktop background.
I promise not to"steal" any other drawings unless someone does another chopped '57 Buick.

Hey widewhitewalls I really like your style and the stuff you do. My only suggestion would be forget the 32 shirt and make another one for Model "A"'s. There is already so much 32 apparel out there, why not show some love for the one car most guys can drive and own. Plus everybody knows that the Model A is so much cooler.....well that is until you can afford a deuce. Nice work!

Well here's one from me. Just finished(?) it a few hours ago.Not sure if I like it very much.
I may go back and do a re-vamp of it. It all came about by thinking about pinstriping and how the lines
reflect each other from side to side(most of the time). So why not try something like this.
Sorry it scanned dark down the center a bit.

Rollie, nice work! too bad you're in canada. would love some of that when i get there on the project...motorcity, dutch, mojo, janne, nice work. (how's your foot?) great work by everyone! the talent here is awesome and an inspiration for those of us who just like playing:D
i got another one done...
you know how critical stance is when building a car. everything kind of goes around the rolling stock. so much mental work goes into this part of a build, checking clearances, backing the daily driver out of the garage to step back for a better look. this painting is about that part of the build where most of the work occurs between your ears

Motorcitythreads, I really dig all the texture and layering going on in your image of the '55 gasser, Falconizer_62, I like the spontanaety(sp?) of the piece you just posted, it capture the scene you're describing very well, The quickness of the paint/brushwork makes me think of the frantic moving of cars in the garage just to check the stance out on your project in the works..the unfinished sketchy quality also relates back to the under construction project...I really really like what's going on in your painting!~Mojodaddy

60's Concept Art
I had my scanner running this evening
and thought that I would post some
concept art from various 60 car magazines.
One of my favorite artists of that era is Stan Mott.
He was able to infuse humor and real illustrative style into his art.
(His drawings are the ones that say Mott-Dart... etc)

needs more work. Like here if you watch carefully you see that I change

The idea to run the pipes across the surface of the deck lid was the genisis if this concept. From there it was what car and why. The Corvair came to mind when Nate posted the recent Art Challenge and thus the two ideas became one. (Sharpen your pencils and join the fun over there; you've got til Sunday to add your vissions.)

The faded red and the gray are too much the same contrast, when it gets smaller it'll look like mud in the middle and you won't see any detail.
A good way to check your colors is to convert it to grayscale and see what you get. I like to sometimes work in b/w first then colorize it later.
Nice detailed execution though!

At the same scale? I've always just rubbed the side of a soft pencil lead over the back of the original then redraw over the sketch lines. It's lighter than carbon but only gives you the basic strokes as a guide to flesh out.
For a slight scale-up, I kwik copy my scetch at a pre-set enlargement and then use the same technique as above.

Wasko, if you are trying to work on a smaller scale you can use transfer paper/carbon paper. You can get it in 8.5"x11" sheets or in rolls that you can cut to whatever size you need it's made by a company named "SARAL". Basically you just lay your line drawing on top of the carbon paper with the carbon side laying on the surface you are transferring to. Then you take a pencil or pen and trace over the image. Your hand pressure determines how dark and thick the line will turn out in your image. It works pretty well for what it is, although sometimes if you move your hand around alot when you draw like I do, you can get some "stray" carbon marks that you will have to erase.
To be honest a projector is by far a better investment. You can still do really small paintings with them and when you're comfortable with those you have the ability to move up in scale. I suggest getting a Prism projector or a Super Prism projector. Those are the best one out there right now. They give you a clear precise line to work from.~I hope all this rambling helps, if you need anymore help just P.M. me and I'll be glad to help~Mojodaddy

I agree with the projector idea. A grid is lots of work. For small work make your own 'carbon' with a dark chalk/charcoal smeared on the back side of the drawing, or use a light table, which is also easily made. As for a projector, I've had and used a Super AG100 for many years and it works great! Try it...you'll like it. Good luck, Wasko.

A projector is a good idea, they are really useful.
You can also use the old grid method.
I know a guy that does a lot of mural work.
He has sheets of paper bluelined with typical
brick and cinderblock porportions. He draws
over the grid, then goes to the actual wall and
can scale it up using the real bricks on the wall.
Smart huh?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to transfer a sketch to canvas or opaque paper? I spoke with Coop a little bit about a projector, but Im not ready to work in such a large scale just yet. Any help is appreciated!! Travis
WASKO: There are several ways....
1: The old fashioned way is to use transfer paper; a common brand is Saral which comes in several colors such as white, yellow, blue, red etc...you place the transfer paper (with the color side down) between your sketch and the surface you wish to transfer it too, such as board, canvas, metal etc...then you retrace your sketch with a pen/pencil and viola' your sketch is now transferred to your new working surface. Saral is wax-free so there is no issue using water-soluable paints such as watercolor, goache etc. A tip learned the hard way is to do your retrace with a different color pen than you did the orginal sketch...this is so you can easily tell where you have traced, and where you have yet to trace. I usually use a red ballpoint pen for the re-trace. This same technique is also handy for transferring an sketch to sheetmetal for lettering, flaming, striping a car. I also suggest you make a copy of your original artwork in a B&W copier and scale the work up/down as you see fit in the copier, tile it back together if you're working big and if so, add a grid to your copies so you will have an easier time tiling it back together. I've done several pieces this way and in one way this method has a big advantage over a projector is that you can use the transfer paper very easily over a compound surface (trunk lid, mailbox, trash can, bowling pin etc) which a projector cannot do accurately because the projector always projects a flat image, thus it is typically somewhat distorted on a heavy-compound surface. This method is tedious, but time-tested. You can find Saral at your local art store or sometimes crafts stores too.
2: Another way is something we stumbled upon in school using a B&W copier and a blender marker. You have to be using paper, illustration board or fine canvas in order for this to work. It will not work on metal, non-porous surfaces etc...
Once you have your sketch where you want it, make a mirror image of your sketch in a scanner, copier or by doing your original sketch on tracing paper or vellum and simply flipping it over in the copier....Now you take your sketch, put it in a B&W copier (it HAS to be B&W, color copiers will not work) and make an old-fashioned B&W copy, place your new mirror image of your sketch face down upon the surface you want to transfer it to and then retrace your sketch with a nice new juicy blender marker from your local art store. The marker ink loosens up the toner from the copy just enough to make a faint image upon your receiving surface. Remember to use a grid so you can re-tile it back together if you plan to reduce or enlarge the image.
3: The grid system...Whenever I am asked to do a photo-realistic painting of something I use the grid system. It too is an old-fashioned method but time-tested.
4: Buy a projector...they're great for scaling up images and if someday you work big like Coop does, you pretty much have to go with a projector. A projector can be a real time saver.
I hope that was somewhat helpful-good luck with your work.

I really like all the hand painted artwork this week, fantastic.
Finished painting the Richfield sign (30"x12") and cut a new V8 logo (20"x6") from Tomcat's CAD data - to be completed later.
That's really cool jokem. I love seeing my CAD files come to life! Glad their getting put to a good use.
Here's my rendering of the file jokem started with.

Maybe I'll try this out... I'm a newb on the board here.
Just finished some drawings for gas jacket back-patches that my cc is doing up. These will be embroidered about 11"x13" on black canvas. All the parts were drawn by hand individually and then scanned in, assembled and 'inked' in Photoshop. Originally had plans for pinstriping designs in the background, and more detail in the engine, but these guys charge by the 1000 stitches, so cost is prohibitive...

I hope nobody minds me digging this up so late. I posted a painting earlier in the show but I was not happy with it.
With much re-painting this, I am happy with. On to the next one.
I could not deal with the green.
Check my earlier post to see the changes.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to transfer a sketch to canvas or opaque paper? I spoke with Coop a little bit about a projector, but Im not ready to work in such a large scale just yet. Any help is appreciated!! Travis
Good art supply stores will have Transfer Paper,
usually white and dark gray.
Tape one long edge of you art work to the surface.
That way you can flip it up and down to check your progress, without losing the location.
Slide the Transfer Paper under you artwork, and trace away.
BUT
Make sure you have the Transfer Paper right side up !
I borrowed a projector once.Wasn't a high dollar piece.
Disappointing.Didn't buy my own.

Here's a very small smattering of artwork auctioned off at the Chicago Brushmasters charity art auction held last weekend at the Chicago WoW. All hand painted with trusty 1Shot.
Enjoy!

One more
for the stack of stuff.
Another Bic pen sketch.
This one shows hubless wheels,
cantilevered front suspension,
a transverse mid engine and 34 Ford
body on steroids.

"Wasko",
There are 2 more methods I can think of… 1) Something called a "Pouncing Wheel" (or even just a thick strait pin… like a hat pin) available @ sign supply shops or your better art supply stores. Works great unless there is too much detail. Copy your sketch on a black & white copier to size. Then run the wheel around to trace over your lines. It will punch a bunch of wholes in the copy. If the whole closes up the flip it over and hit it lightly with fine sandpaper to open them up a lil'. Then get an old sock (0ne that is porous). Run down to your local hard ware and pick up squeeze bottle of chalk dust for use w/chalk lines. I get a round Oat Meal box, stretch the mouth of the sock over it then squeeze a bunch of chalk dust into it. Place your copy over the final surface tape it down. Then pat it with the old sock (otherwise known as a "Pouncing Bag") then carefully lift the copy straight off and there should be chalk dots left behind (don't sneeze!). Then Quickly re-sketch your design on the new surface, taking care not to rub off the chalk. Then I hit it w/compressed air to blow off the excess chalk… but you might not have that option. This is also a great way to transfer a flame design from one side of a car to the other.
2) You can make your own "Carbon Paper"… Take a sheet of Tracing Paper and a "Graphite Stick". Rub the back of the Tracing Paper in ever direction (like doing cross-hatching). Then take a Kleenex squirt some rubber cement thinner on it and lightly burnish the graphite w/it to smooth it out. Then you have greaseless Carbon Paper.
Finally here is my last minuet entry into the H.A.M.B. Art Challenge #5…

I did a Pounce Pattern how to thread here a couple years ago.
Should be in the archives. Search for Pounce.
MUCH quicker than using transfer paper,
but you might find you lose some detail.
