Saw a thread last week, some one in Austin, TX needed a press. I have a 20-ton press but Fresno is a long drive. Could and should the HAMB start a tools to loan area? I have a three-car hobby shop with always at least one bay open. I cannot store stuff for more than a day or two, but would always be open to loaning my tools and a little space for a hamb bro. I also am building a paint booth; it is a secret paint booth. Other tools: mig, oxy, buzz box, large compressor, two of every size wrench up too 1 ½ and too many sockets. Have a cherry picker, micrometers, torque wrenches almost you name it. I am offering it too my bros. or to be politically correct sisters. What do you think?

Great idea but then does Ryan get involved when someone doesn't return an item??:D
I wished you lived closer to me;)

Or you to me. LOL I am not into loaning tools, just the shop area, with the tools. Exceptions it it is some one i rally "know". The compressors, welders and such are hard to loan.

I would just like a couple people near me so that my wife does not half to lift bodies and front ends off of cars. Can we include like minded buddies for rent? Or perhaps some of those Zombies I hear are running around South Austin.

Why??
One would be insurance reasons. When we did a HAMB Chop at Roadstar's shop a couple of years ago, with over 50 HAMB guys, the owner agreed but was really concerned regarding insurance purposes. even though it's a "hobby shop" you still have to be careful with folks you don't know getting hurt.....hell in today world, some friends might even screw you if they got hurt.

Personally, I'm all for this. I have a 28x44 shop with 200 amps of electric, woodstove & propane heat, fridge, radio, & satellite tv. Ever growing but decent assortment of hand tools, oxy/acet, mig, arc, plasma, sawzall, jigsaw, bandsaw, tablesaw, compressor, good lighting, etc. I also have a big ass 12' worktable, ideal for laying out big panels, patterns, etc. Added bonus, I have a dumpster on site, leave your trash here!
In terms of injury, just please be careful - and until I know you personally, please make an appointment - on a day when I am home. Shit, I'll even lend you a hand with your project, or I may be working on mine in the bay next to you. I am happy to have a spot for you for a few hours, few days... we can work it out. The shop is never FULL, but never empty, either. Just don't take advantage. Bring some snacks, beer (Miller Lite 12oz bottles please) or throw a few bucks on the floor to help with the heat & electric.
PM me - I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, about 20 miles east of Annapolis

Just ask my Dad. Every now and then he drives down to my place with the sole intention of filling is car back up with his stuff and driving the 5 houses back to his place.:D The search is good for him, keeps him busy and outta trouble. After all these years it's kinda like a family joke.

It's just as easy as making friends with your local HAMBers. If you don't have the right tools, someone close by most likely will and they'll let you use them or come over to help you out.

hey im all for loaning tools and my shop for folks in need but stuff just happens sometimes by accident and sometimes not .. i even bought my wife her own set of tools and toolbox just to keep her out of my stuff .. but did that work you might ask??? nope! anyway i think its pretty cool that folks are willing to offer tools and shop time to others because when you get right down to it , it is the right thing to do but anyone who says this doesnt make them just a little bit nervous is full of bull ..

That's true, but think about people who have no shop, limited tools and limited or no experience. Gotta learn somewhere. What did you know in the beginning? What do you know now, or, more importantly, what do you still have to learn?
Personally, I am dying to find someone local who can teach me how to shape metal. I've considered attending a course, happy to travel a few hundred miles for the education... but paying $1000+ for the adventure only gouges my "toy" money, and the places I've seen advertised offer no hands-on experience. So instead, I have to catch discovery channel "productions" and watch Jesse James do it. Looks like a talented fellow, makes it look real easy, but I'm not ready to drop a few grand to buy the shit I see in his shop. I guess you're only as good as the tools you work with, but buying tools and having a desire to learn doesn't make you a craftsman.
I figure karma is usually a good thing, maybe I help out a fellow car nut with donating my megaer experience, decent tools and nice shop, maybe someone lends me the same courtesy by teaching me something I haven't learned yet. If someone burns me, lesson learned. Hell, maybe I make a new friend, share some good times, or get someone to split the bill on that 9k lbs 2-post asymmetric lift I crave!
Where will this hobby / life / disease be if those who know won't share? Probably to the bolt-on rice-burner shit like coffee can mufflers and excessive NOS plumbed to a billet-lined casket. I'm glad to see so many young people interested in cars, but sorry to see the cars they seem to be interested in.:o
Viva hot rods, customs, and most importantly - Viva the HAMB!:D

YOU need to attend the Jalopy SHowdown in PA in May. Not only are they having a metal shaping seminar BUT there are a few HAMB guys attending that are great metal men that you need to meet and make friends with.

Thanks! I found the HAMB in November, don't know how I made it through life without it, hoping to go to every show I can. I'll be looking forward to this one especially.:)
