View Full Version : Channeling question?
I have just bought a 30 ford 5 window coupe,I was just wondering if anyone has any pics of how they channeled their car (subfloor pics) I would like to get some ideas.I was going to use 1x2 rectangular tubing. But I like to see how other people do things.

I don't have pics, but I've seen them on here before and can describe the process.
Step #1. place body on frame.
Step #2. cut out floor of body...watch toes as body falls to floor.
Step #3. Pick up body off of floor and prop up with blocks of wood to desired hieght.
Step #4. Fill in gaps with donor metal.
Step #5. Drive and enjoy.
OK, so that was the short version, but thats the idea.
Many folks on here have cut out the entire floor and built a subframe out of tubing and skinned it with sheet metal.
Somebody get this man some pics. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here's a pic I found in my archives. Stolen from here I believe.
I think this vehicle belongs to Pete up in the North east... (alterboys c.c.?)
anyhow, hope he don't mind me posting it.
I had a pretty good idea on how to do it,but I like to see what other poeple have done. This is my first traditional rod.I am used to building early to late 60's cars,But I have since gotten bitten by the hotrod bug. Thanks for the pics.

Heres how I did my Plymouth. We used 1x1, and 1x2 rectangular tube and 1x2 Channel depending on if it was an attachment point to the frame. Keep in mind your new floor! Make sure you've got attachment points for EVERY piece of tin you're gonna lay down. Here is where some forethought can save you tons of aggravation!!

I didn't get any pictures DURING the channeling, but here is a couple taken after we skinned it on both sides. This is a 6 inch channel, and we used 1 X 1 square tubing.

If your body still has a decent subfloor in it, don't cut it out. There is another way to channel a car without chopping up the subfloor. What you do is cut out the cross channels, a little section of the rear subfloor where the axle goes, and the lower firewall legs. Then slide the frame into the body from the side, and bolt the bottom of the frame to the top of the subrails. You might need to make some shims here and there there the bolts will go through, as well as fab up some "L" brackets or other mounts. This method saves the ridgidity and squareness of the body over hacking out the whole subframe. Plus it allows the option of "unchanneling" at a later date if so desired. It works well on Model A's and 32's. This is the method that Junkyard Dog used on his 32 sedan and I believe he was happy with the results. Goood Luck. CF
