View Full Version : Speedway Steering column/steering wheels??

This weekend we were supposed to cut down my '36 column for the car, but because of my headers and the angle the column has to be to fit to the rack location, the banjo wheel is in a crappy position... practically IN the windshield.
So I'm thinking about the Speedway hot rod column for $120. What are my steering wheel options with it? Can I run a '59 Impala wheel with that? It looks like in the picture, that there are no splines. Would it still suffice with just the 3 bolts to hold it down? Am I going to be stuck with an aftermarket wheel (and big money)?
Suggestions? The down side is I need a column by the middle of the week, so I don't have time to go get a junkyard column.
Help!?

Something else to consider...it's more expensive but you won't need to buy a new steering wheel.

Hey Django, whats a rack? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Naw, if your cutting down the column, nibble off a bit more and use the orignal.. Make a plug for the chopped end and support the inter shaft. If you want, send me it and I'll do it for ya. All you have to do is the welding on her.. Save your money for billet http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's not so much the column as it is the wheel itself. The banjo is too big for the angle the column is setting at. So the problem is more that I have to run a smaller wheel than a banjo. So I don't want to cut up the original column if I don't have to. (Dad is weird about that)
I looked at the Limeworks column too. But my problem IS the size of the banjo, so I dont think that helps me.
So... will the '59 Impala wheel fit this Speedway column? It's a 1 3/4 column. Page 70 in their new catalog.
Yeah, I have a rack. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif That's the way Dad started it and believe me, I wish I had scrapped it and started over with an axle about $400 ago...

that column is like the limeworks column, it uses a 3-bolt mounted wheel like a grant or bell wheel...i don't think a `59 chey wheel will fit

Is there some kind of adapter that would make it fit?

i'm sure some sort of adapter could be made, it would probabilly look like crap though....why not just use the whole column out of the `59 chevy? you could cut the bottom off, put in a bushing, weld or machine on some splines to fit borgensom u-joints, and hook it to your rack.
or just use the inner shaft,so it will fit the wheel , and make a new outer tube. i've made many steeering columns out of 1-1/2 or 1-3/4 tubing and some pete & jakes four bar bushings.. you then have to figure something out for a cup to cover the backside of the wheel...i've used old tack cups, mag wheel centers, a go-kart clutch drum...and even stuff i found in the kitchen

Doesn't someone make a $99 GM splined hot rod column?

How about the Grant Banjo wheel. I know you need an installation kit for late model cars, but will that work on just the 3 bolt principal like the speedway column? They have a banjo wheel that is polished that I can scuff up and paint to make it look like an original banjo. (the leather clad and mahogany versions look too street rod)

Hey Django,
I'm thinking you might want to use a 1972 to 1975 jeep cj column.. Short 36" length and same OD as a 1940.Plus they used a GM saginaw 525 box little larger then the Vega and had a GM splines on both ends of the column.. Is that what your looking for? Most folks with jeeps go with tilt steering to clear there bellies http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That might work. Any idea where I could find one in about 48 hours? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
