View Full Version : My Hot Rod Got A Little Hotter Tonight...

Cruising home from a photo shoot with my hot female boss tonight and I ran into a little problem. Not with her..with the 5 window. Seems that my radiator pushed back (Later discovered it was a broken bracket) and hit the fan. This caused a small hole in the bottom tank. I heard it hit and knew instantly by the sound that it wasn't good. I was probably an hour from home with no cell phone and only a few tools. The anti-freeze mix was coating my windshield and I had no working wiper. The fan was spraying the stuff all over the firewall and front of the car. Its dark and I can't see shit. Flat glass at night is enough of a problem. A six inch chop didn't help either.. Heres what I did. Kept driving and checking the temp gauge. long story short, I made it home. Temp never made it past 170. Luckily I had a few things going in my favor.

1) It was a very cool night. Maybe like 55 degrees.

2) It was only a small hole in my radiator

3) I was able to diagnose the problem in the drivers seat and keep moving.

4) Not alot of red lights on the way home.

5) A radiator with some big tanks.

Up until then I thought I had all my bugs worked out. Should have had that bracket fixed when I had the radiator out the first time. Now I HAVE to get it fixed. Looks like I have a new list of things to take care of.

Lets hear some road stories and side-of-the-road fixes!

Spike.
PS- pics of the boss are on thier way. She looks great.

I was coming home from today's swap meet this afternoon with my neighbor kid riding shotgun in the Rocky Goodtime Van {TM} when suddenly, without warning, we hear a "pop" sound like a rock hitting the windshield but there was no oncoming traffic at the time.
"Hmm, wonder what made THAT noise?" I wondered to myself.
In 10 seconds, The kid yells "DUUUUUUUUUUUDE! There's oil going all over the dash!!!!"
My dash-top mounted oil pressure gauge had popped it's cheesy plastic feed line, depositing 200 degree,50 psi used motor oil on the inside of the windshield and all over the dash top, running into the dash-top mounted stero speakers and cascading down the front of the ex-blue dash pad onto the floormat...
Well, I don't have to tell you how slick and smooth Skynard sounds through well lubed speakers.
I skillfully manuvered the goodtime van toward the gravel shoulder and shut off the ignition key....all the way, thereby locking the steering column before I got stopped. Damn neart went over the bank but I slid the tires right up to the edge and reached in the back for an old towel kept especially for spilled Diet Dr Pepper catastrophes.
I grabbed a pair of vice grips and pinched off the plastic tube.....fired the sbc and checked for leaks while "Impala Tom" pulls over and offers help and a qt of oil for the cause. It looks like we only lost about a cup or 2 but it made a helluva mess! We were able to soldier on with a lot of cussing and wiping...I'll replace the el-cheapo line with a gennie copper line tomorrow or so....

Rocky.......I guess that's why fuel gauges have to be on the outside?? What a mess. Spike, keep some Double Bubble in the glove box! AND.............keep that shit up and "Mamma Spike" will be driving the "Gay Coupe"tm and your ass will be back to puttin' around on the scooter! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Those plastics lines suck. I had a small fire last winter in my car and it melted the plastic line faster than I could react. It started pumping flaming oil all over the fuel pump and alternator. Scary shit!!! I replaced it with a copper line.No more problems and if it does catch fire again,at least the line won't go up.

I've been having problems with my old beat-ass mustang lately.. been working too much, and neglecting the poor thing. Anyhow, last week I had some serious overheating problems (don'tcha love when the water no longer touches the temp sensor, so your gauge shows OK while it's actually boiling inside?).

I though the thermostat stuck, so I yanked it and replaced it with a 160 degree (why didn't I think of that in the springtime?!), and that's when I noticed that the chinese-chrome water neck has some serious corosion in it. "I'll fix it later." Bolt it back together, and 2 hours later i'm replacing that POS with a new one because it decided to go ahead and pop. When I was putting that one on (had to go chrome again, because it clears my tower brace, and stock doesn't) and I noticed that the stupid assed little rubber hose that runs between the water pump and the intake inlet (ford 302) is cracking heavy on the ends... "I'll fix it later".

Yesterday evening, I remembered I needed to add some oil (only 2qts low) and some power steering fluid (when it doesn't show up on the dipstick, is that bad?...) and I noticed I had some dirty-water residue on the air cleaner. That little shit hose sprung a leak. All the parts stores were closing by then, (the one open didn't have it, of course) so I had to make one from a piece of heater hose. It's caved in from the sharp bend it needs, so lord only knows how long it will work.. I just need to get to work and get a replacement on lunchtime...

Man, I really need to spend some time with that poor car...

Heres a pic from the shoot. It was on the way home that I developed the problem. guess the radiator couldn't take the pressure..or the heat. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif This shot and many more are going to be on my 2004 Calendar. Didn't want to take anything (and I still don't..) from the HAMB calander. I actually feel bad that I didn't contribute to that one as well.

Spike. Pullleeeeze! You couldn't have just 'run out of gas' someplace eh? You had to pull out all the stops and use the 'hole in the radiator' gag heh?

Smooooooth.

The car looks great. Nice seat cover too. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Lets hear some road stories and side-of-the-road fixes!

Spike.

Last year before our annual trek out East I noticed the temp in the Safari was running a bit hotter than usual so I decided to flush the cooling system and eplace the t'stat.Hoses were good from the year before.
Replaced the 160 t'stat with a 180 and thoroughly flushed(or so I thought)the cooling system including the underseat heater core.
The trip out(about 850 miles)was uneventful but about 2 days later I noticed the temp flucuating again.Tried to do another flush but it didn't seem to help.
On the way back it really started running hot;if I drove under 50 the gauge would head skyward.Figured it wouldn't be much of a problem because it was all highway running and I could drive straight through.
Everything was fine until we ran into fog so thick I couldn't safely drive over 30 mph.The temp started climbing and I hit upon the idea of slipping in behind one of the semis that were blasting by me doing about 70.I still don't know how they could see!
Decided to stop at my aunt's house in Jamestown as the truck I was following pulled off and I was flying blind again.Made it to the house finally(drove right past the driveway it was so foggy).
Next morning I pulled the radiator and started calling radiator shops in the area to see about having it boiled out.Found out they don't do that in New York anymore due to EPA regs.So what do I do now?I'm still 300 miles from home and the guy at one of the shops says he can have a recore in about TWO WEEKS!.
Got an inspiration:went down to the local hardware store(with my aunt's car)and bought a couple gallons of Liquid Plum-R,taped off all the openings with duct tape(never leave home without it),filled it up and put the cap on.Rotated it about every 15 minutes for about 2 hours and then backflushed it several times.Re-installed it and put the old antifreeze back in.Had a problem bleeding all the air out(happens everytime)but it worked.Ran cool all the way home and up until about 3 months ago when the new t'stat stuck closed.Figured I better not push my luck again and got it re-cored.Going to go back to a 160 'stat as I have none in there now and it runs too cold(160 degrees after running for an hour measured with an accurate thermometer).
Anyway that's my "on the road fix"
