JohnB just brought to my attention the fact that the KKOA will not be bringin' their "Spectacular" to Lancaster, OH next year.... So the opportunity to spend a weekend with HAMBers in my hometown is kinda gone...AND I got ta thinkin'.

What about an independant show? A reliability run? My question is what do most of you look for in a rod run? One day, Two.... Trophys, bands, the DJ, give-a-ways? My thought has always been it's about the people first and the iron is a highlight....A big bonfire and bench racing? How about some input on what you guys enjoy? How many of you would travel to central OHIO, and when would be a good time of the year to do it? Keep in mind there will probably be an "entry fee". I'm big on the idea that anyone attending gets an event Tee, or a "free" meal... maybe a real goodie bag with decent stuff. It would also help cover the costs if we have to rent a location.....although my parents have a 5 acre field thats always mowed..... Whatcha think????

I'm thinkin Skipstitch is onto something here. Knowing Lancaster and the surrounding area like I do, I know there's a mulititude of things we could do over the course of a weekend.

Re: Hypothetical Rod Run & Custom Crawl...
If you build it, they will come...
I think thats how that saying goes. I like the idea of smaller
gatherings over the big rod runs any more.
Maybe I have been doing it too long, but the long lines t0 get in, the
hassle to park togeather if you have more than a couple cars. Inflated
hotel prices near the event, The lines at resturants ect. You get my
point.
So, for example, the Hunert car pileup was the best time I've had at a
car function in a long time. It was just the right size and everyone
there had the same interest, to have fun with there cars and check out
what other people had done to there cars. The one thing that was
commented on by more than a few people was the attitude of the people.
There were no awards, So people that go to events only for that type of
glory were weeded out right away.
There was a entry fee and a T-shirt given to the entrants. and you could
buy even t's till they sold out.
There was a few bands that played starting in the afternoon and played
into the night.
I think the fact that it seemed more like a party at Marty & Sons body
shop than a "Car Show" was the bonus for me.
Billet proof Detroit was another small scale event with a BIG return.
The only difference is it didn't continue into the night. Hopefully this
show will contunue without growing onto something other that what the
original intent was for the show.
So if you want to put togeather a small scale evet with like minded
folks I have a feeling it would be a sucess.
A road tour type of event, or a reliabilty run sounds like it would be
fun also. the so called "Cruise Nights" where everyone gets there half a
day early to PARK there cars and sit in a chair makes me ill. Lets drive
them aroud the Ohio countryside and then go have a BBQ. Now that would
appeal to me.
Like I said Shawn You put something togeather and the HAMB people will
come

I love your parents, and your sister's cool too. Have it at their place, but you should warn them first http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

One of these days I might even get to meet you http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I can tell you all right now that Shawn's got alot of stuff to take care of and some pressure to perform. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif But if he decides to attempt this or wants to attempt this as a group of car guys, I know of a few people who will jump right in and help the best they can. Lancaster and Fairfield county are starting to feel like a home away from home to me.

I've learned from experience to start off small with just a group of car related friends, hot dogs, hamburgers, everyone brings a dish to pass and their own beverage. Very casual. Start on Saturday morning with a cruz thru the countryside to a place to have lunch, a few siteseeing stops/cool garage stops in the area, then back to "start"/the farm, to BBQ and bench race around a big bonfire. Folks can camp over and leave on Sunday morning after a group breakfast or something. A nice Sunday drive back home. This would be the type of weekend that would yank my crank. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm in!
I had a great time at Lancaster, and alot of it is because I got to hang with several of you!(ahhh, group hug now http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
Low-key, I'm not interested in awards. Unles it's some home-brewed deal, like'a farthest traveled type a thing.
I think a pot-luck, or fee to cover costs including food.
Either of the location suggestions sounds cool to me.
near Motels, or offer camping maybe..
Either way, we'd come hang out for sure.

if ya decide to have and bands, i can line up a fella that can sing and play bluegrass and old country like it's nobody's business. probably would do it for free. has a band that he plays with too, but that might cost. an old teacher of mine also has a band that does 60s-70s rock, DAMNED good. just so ya know.

Thanks for the input/feedback.... I'm thinkin' something next summer may be reality. I'm sure the campin' would be no problem on the old Appleman Ranch (I'll be sure to tell the parents!) Maybe a small open house at the shop. Coffee and donuts and then a "run" through the country side. There's a winding state route around here that would be perfect. Hmmm...
I agree about the awards thing... but I think a "HardLuck" and "Long Distance" might be in order. Maybe JohnB could help out! You know anyone willing to do a couple trophys? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I'm also seein' this as a Pre-registered ONLY thing... that way we'd know what to prepare for in the way of food and shirts and such. It would also help when planning "pit stops" on a route if we do a reliabiltiy thang...

Skip, thes precisely the way I am doing the HAMBnHog Rendezvous. LOw key, concentrate on actually driving the cars then hang out with freinds, new and old (not disappear into the motel)

Oh yeah, feed em well and they WILL come back http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Awards? I might know someone who can do that. Funny thing, yesterday I was looking through Andy Southard's Hot Rods of the 50s book and thought to myself "I'd like to build some old time lookin trophies for some event"

Now I got a reason.

I know I don't have really any say here...since I won't be coming to the run more than likely.

But nonetheless...........you get my opinion anyway. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I grew up in the 70's going to rod runs all over. I miss that. I wish 1 day rod runs with no prizes or trophies would start to show back up. Guys would gather from all over the state, DRIVING their cars to the run. Trailered cars were unheard of. They had driving games etc kinda like the bikers do now. You hang out all day, swap stories, have a good time and DRIVE your hot rod home. That's what I miss.

Wow........lot's of energy coming off this post.......John B I've made some kool trophies in the past out of piston's that everyone thought were pretty kool.......I'll echo the same thought......if you get this gig up and flying, I'll be there for the FUN!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

DO IT!

I was thinking about this post on the way to work...over the last few years I grown to where I could care less about how many cars are at a show, what organization is putting it on. I'm tired of the same old custom shows with a bunch of "gook wagons" and a few nice ones, and the same old '50s music blasting away over and over and over all day long. I think that despite the efforts of a few (JohnB and straycatkustoms, to name two), the two major custom organizations are going to slowly dwindle away, maybe not die, but just look at the average age of most people at these shows. Yes, maybe due to the influence of the HAMB, or maybe just growing up....I'd a lot rather spend my money and vacation time going to a small get together with like-minded people, with cars of the type I want to see. The large organizations with always have their place, but I think we are going to see a growth of the smaller, one day type deals...

Damn, how did I get off into all that. Back to the original question, I think a reliablity run/cruise would be great. Meet for breakfast, head off for a few destinations, then back for a cookout until whenever...hell, I know some people who stayed up until 5 am in a Lancaster hotel parking lot once... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Build it and they will come....or I will anyway.

Well, DAMN...I guess if Kustom52 is gonna drive all the way from Alabama I can surely head the 'ol sedan up that way from Indy!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Make it a reliability run. Meet some where for breakfast...have about a 100-150 mile route with interesting stops laid out and a stop somewhere for lunch. End up back where you want to have the cookout with a big bonfire. That way the folks can kick back..have some food...drink a few beverages of choice and get to know some of the people at the event. My idea of camping is Holiday Inn so have a hotel lined up for us 'ol farts!! My first reaction to shirts and any trophies at all is to forget about them!!! A small window decal for the event would be cool. When I went to Ryans reliability run in Kansa City a few years back he also had a p/u truck with tools and a trailer follow us in case anyone broke down or needed help. This is a good idea if it can be arranged. The secret is to keep it low key and have a good time. What do you call middle Ohio?? Columbus area???

Hmmm... the Ohio Valley Reliabilty Run... kinda has a cool ring to it!!! You guys really have me cranked up about this. And I'm sure I could find some cool stops along the way.... I'm gettin' set for a weeks vacation. Looks like I have something to ponder while I'm Bass fishin'. And I have the A-OKAY for use of the 5 acre field. Hey ChromeRat, any idea what that buddy of yours charges for industrial Dining Canopy Rental? PM me (I'll get back to you next weekend). I have a couple other details I'm workin' on.... What time of the summer makes most sense?

i'll see if i can do some horse tradin and see what kinda deal we can get out of his dad. i'd pretty much bank on not having to pay anything. the way it looks, that friend of mine will probably go along with us. he's the guy getting the 60 nomad on the road, i doubt he'd want to miss something like this. if he goes with, i bet he'd be able to just bring one down for free if they aren't all rented out. when the time comes near, i'll arrange to have one for all of us. it's a shame we gotta wait till next year!

Laborday weekend is out for me though. I'm a judge for a local charity show put on by a church.
It keeps growing, last year there were 1150 cars. Because it's all free- entry, food, everything. so it's a big deal around here. It even moved from the church grounds to a local fairgrounds.
anyway, that's my .02

i still think fiarfield, hocking county in the fall with all the leavers chaning colors would be be perfect.also cooler weather for a bonfire ,maybe, and if ya dont have good insul in the car you wont be bakin ass hot by the time its over.and there is some more of my 1 and a half cents worth

yeah, booboo has the right idea. A cruz through the country in the fall with a bunch of hotrods would be great.
but in the spirit of Judge Judy, I may need a Hotel if it gets into Sept.! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif That way, Mrs. grumpy will be more inclined to give the thumbs up!

Yeah, fall would be nice...SO, if I can drive up for that, you all can come down for Pinstriper's deal at Rocco and Cheater's, right? Better make your reservations early at Logan's Motor Court...where you have to turn the damn light on for yourself (we ain't leaving it on like Motel six!)
