The 6th grade class at the school where my brother's kids go (Birmingham) are going to be issued laptops for school... no books... everything on the computer.
That just doesn't sit right with me... how sad to not have the memories of getting fresh new books with that new book smell, or the old books that have the sticker in front where you can read the names of all the kids that came before you...
I'm getting old.

Not to mention...it's not as easy to slip a sardine between two pages on your buddy's laptop and then slam the cover shut with your fist on it!!!
(Am I the only one who ever did that??? Laughing as people walked wide around the guy carrying the smelly math book a few days later...till the day he gets to that page and sees a flattened fish looking back at him???)
Ha Ha Ha...PRICELESS!!!!

Yeah, My highschool gives us laptops at the beginning of the year to use for papers and shit. I mainly used mine to cruise ebay during study halls.... I used to come on here, but the Tech Department caught me on the Hamb during english class and blocked it. I was just trying to learn stuff I would *actually* use....
But apparently it had too many curse words.
I guess they dont understand higher learning.

Thats crazy, I think my school district is to poor to get new books let alone laptops! In drafting class i always got on the HAMB and the good thing was that since i was the only one in school who liked old cars it never got in the top 10 web addresses daily so it never got blocked.

damn wish the schools would give us kids laptops.
but what's to do when you live in the 49th worst state for school funding? and yet they feel that we should have the will to succeed...........maybe they needed laptops to help them learn hahahaha

Anyone ever see "Fahrenheit 451?"
(NOTE: this is NOT the new Michael Moore film).

Excessive computer use leads to myopia. We're going to grow an entire generation of kids who need glasses...
The fixed focal length coupled with the screen refresh rate will develop the muscles that adjust the lens to only work efficiently in that one focal range. Fancy way of saying we're going to make all our kids nearsighted...

Do the kids drag the laptops around and take them home? I would think the mortality rate on laptops would be high. I can just see the s--t hitting the fan when my kid comes home and says I have to pay a grand for the laptop he "lost". It is bad enough when they want to nail you $30 for some old ragged out, dog eared textbook.

We have laptops on our Fire Trucks at the department where I work. They're called Toughbooks by Panasonic.
They appear to be tougher than the hinges of Hell so far.

There was a story of a soldier who had one of those toughbooks and it took a bullet for him and saved his life.
This does seem crazy to me to give grade schoolers laptops. Unless they are like stripped down things that ONLY do one thing and thats access the various books. The kids are VERY smart these days. I have no doubt there is someone who would be able to crack into one of them.

I read the BOOK!
(Book was much better than the film, as they usually are.)
And it was just as controversial as a Michael Moore film.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Knowing how a lot of kids treat books, their own and others (a sardine would kill a laptop too, so you're the ass-bite (FH) that did that?) I wonder how many laptops will make it to the end of the semster? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

So maybe they'll cut down less trees since the need for paper has been minimized?
Call me a tree hugger or whatever if you want, but that doesn't sound like such a terrible thing to me.

I'm Eighteen came out the week of my eighteenth birthday.
Got to see Alice Cooper play at Firebird Raceway (Boise) with Dr. Hook. Went thru about 2 gallons of Ripple.
I can't imagine giving kids computers in school. They steal each other's backpacks & jackets around here. No damned way would I trust a bunch of 6th graders with something that expensive and breakable outside a supervised classroom. With the snow and ice & rain around here they'd probably all get shorted out just walking to school. Granted they're probably gifts from some company that upgraded to new models, but still, why waste them.
