I am looking at replacing the water pump on my early 302 Windsor, with a polished one.

The one I have has the inlet on left hand side and has a plate in between the pump and the timing case.

Is there a water pump that will bolt straight up to the timing case (no backing plate)?

I will also be getting a radiator made up, so inlet position is not a problem.

I had the same issue when I had to replace the water pump on my 289 from 1964.

Just have the guys at the parts place scrounge in their catalogs for the correct piece.

They will tell you that it will work, but the new pumps do have the plate and, well, it does not work.

I had to go to Car Quest locally and they had the part for me after going to Checker, Auto Zone, and Napa - dealing with retards only makes your projects slower.

if your water pump has the plate you need to replace it with one with a plate, the earlier style that doesnt use the plate has little ramps for the water flow that go a little into the timing cover.
