Welcome to Motorama '67!

This is my entry for Art Challenge #5.

There's already some cool customs in that thread...
so check em out!

The original Scorpion was a coooool custom.
But to my eye, it didn't really look like a scorpion.
Soooooo... here's my entry with a stinger and an aircraft
landing light in its tail. With a mid-engine, pincher style fenders,
a tinted bubble and buckets of chrome The Scorpion is ready
for the car show circuit!!!

GaryC; You never cease to amaze me; Awesome!

Scott Irwin, "Congested" here on the HAMB, asked me to do a rendering of the Model A coupe he's in the process of building. The style of the drawing had to be reminiscent of the classic hot rod drawings by Gus Maanum (see Thread: "Early Hot Rod Sketches" (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=200754&highlight=early+hot+rod+sketches)). The drawing was meant to be part of a logo for the car club that Scott wants to formate around the Santa Cruz Ca. area; S.C.R.U. or Santa Cruz Rods Unlimited.

This is my earliest surviving car art.
I found it this week in my art storage files.
There were many many more but none earlier.

It's a '63 Split window Vette as a gasser.
I was obsessed with the 63 split window that I owned at the time.

By the way... I have it on good authority, that the Seattle grunge
band pirated my name... er, well might have,
actually could have but... OK.. DIDN'T!!!

Drawn in 1968. Pencil on yellow card stock.
Appx. 18" wide

Gary C and Dutch those look fantastic.
...Unkl Ian, as you're the first striper to post today and it was a famous striper that inspired my sketch, may I just say, I love your work. You, and so many talented brushes on this H.A.M.B. board would sure make 'em proud to be associated with you.

Here's one of my favorite cars, Dean Jeffries' '33 ('34?) Sedan. The car just sets so right. Not sure i did it justice as it's a quick sketch.
(P.S. What wheels would work better on it? Superiors maybe?)

I never post here but, I've been doing some stuff I think/hope you guys like. I'm currently working on a BA degree and applying for a BFA this spring in printmaking.

If you see something that looks familiar you might just be right. These prints were based off of photographs I took @ Street Rod Natls in Louisvill circa 2006.
I did a few different versions of this car, playing around with the color and using multiple plates/colors printed on top of eachother. The reason for the random abstract lines is due to the fact that I used a USED plate. New plate this size= $12, used plate = free:)

Haven't posted in awhile as I don't usually take pictures of work anymore. Here's a bike I did last night. The clear still has to be applied.I just did the striping and the graphics;not the layout. The color combo actually works well.
Also two fenders from a bike Ed is working on for himself. The reason one is black and one is silver is because of the way the bike is two-toned.
Also a tank for a friend of mine in Massachusetts.

I also completed the art panel of Fink Eliminator for the lower skirt that covers the mechanical. There will be eight of these. still have a couple to finish. All of Eds Finks will be represented somewhere on the carousel.
This one is about 3 ft tall, acrylic on plywood.

Dragnut has about 200 man hours in him. All the carving is done with a chisel and mallet.
The carving blocks we start with are laminated 2 inch thick basswood. Heres a picture of Dragnut early on.
Its a stupid antiquated process, but I derive a lot of enjoyment out of carving ... "Traditional" I guess.

GARY ...I agree with LabRat....try what Digger does...Do it by hand with "heart" and computer colorize it.To me It would look less "mechanical" and have that "human" touch You definatly have command over. GARY ...I agree with LabRat....try what Digger does...Do it by hand with "heart" and computer colorize it.To me It would look less "mechanical" and have that "human" touch You definatly have command over. If you had that kind of control of a pencil back then...I can only imagine what you could do now! Always cool stuff ! I wait every week to see your creations !!!!!

Hey, Thanks for the generous compliment.

I really appreciate those who are willing to give out the feedback and constructive comments, critical or not; they're a vital tool to any artist.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone.
Thought I'd show you guys a quick sketch of my next painting. It's the iconic pic of Bill Burke's bellytank with Mr. Parks behind the wheel. It is a commissioned piece for a fellow HAMBer, so look for it in a future Friday show

OK. Here's my very first oil painting in my life. Using acrylics has given me little patience for paint drying.
Took this shot of the wet painting.
Uber....fantastic painting. Wish I could get some tips from you and watch you do them over your shoulder.
Made a few changes still after I took this shot(area behind the driver).

I've been staring at this for an hour now. This is one of the most attractive pieces of art ever posted here in my opinion. The colors, the composition, and the execution are TOP DRAWER!
I'll send you my address and you can ship it my way....Absolutely killer.
(Oh yeah, I'm in love with that girl!)

I second the opinion, beautiful work.

Great piece, Lesabre!!! I'm about 10 miles west of C-Pop. I gotta zing down there an' check out that show! Good luck there. I met Robt. Williams at C-Pop when it was in Royal Oak. As I'm sure you know, that gallery is on the
Kustom Kulture 'A' List!

No offence to UberMustang, whose paintings are top notch in my book… But I think you are right up there with him… you just have your own equally valid style… as it should be! Great first attempt at Oil's… Thumbs way up to both of you on your contributions this week!

And Thumbs up to the rest of you contributors as well… As far as I'm concerned, the art show is the best post on the H.A.M.B.!

the shows really up a notch this week
welcome flatratrocket, those destressed plates look great printn an old rod. imagine HAMBers using old metal. Chaz the carosel is amazing, you really stuck to it, hey we all use stupid, antiquated processes, i like to call it "by hand". it's all about an honest piece of art.
keep it up everybody, its a surprizing thread each week

Thanks! That's part of the look I was going for.

One thing's for sure. Rockwell would really appreciate it! He was a real "slice of life" painter. Yours is a "slice of Hotroders life". Can't tell you how much I like it!!! I'm especially blown away by the reflection of the bricks on the hubcaps...AMAZING!!!

I'd like to thank Dutch Courage for doing such an outstanding piece of artwork for me! He brought to life exactly what I had spinning around my head.

I e-mailed Ger a rough sketch and some artists styles that I like and he e-mailed back some questions, like "do you want to run a '32 grill or a Model A grill, what kind of headlights, white walls or black, things that only a hot rodder would ask. And a few days later he had this masterpiece drawn up for me.

I highly recommend Ger for anyone out there who has a vision but doesnt have the natural ability to bring it to life.

Thanks again Ger "Dutch Courage" I've got a few more ideas coming your way!
