View Full Version : What's the Deal with putting Chevy Brakes on a Ford Axle????

How does this work?
Never tried.

I have an early 50's Chevy truck axle with hydralic brakes and would like to mount those spindles and brakes on an early ford axle.

Does this work? Are the kingpins the same diameter? It seems I have seen stuff in speedway to do this?
Do I need special kingpins or spacers?

Will this just not work? Maybe I'm just confused and this will never work.

There must be something that makes it complicated, because otherwise it seems this set up would be more common.

Thanks.

I looked into this once, Bob. No only are the chevy kingpins a different diameter, they're a different length. It's be a nightmare to figure out. It seems like the kingpin inclination was different too. The chevy pickup spindle is a little different than the '49-54 chevy passenger car spindle and all the major disc brake kits use the passenger car spindles BUT! If you send Speedway your chevy pickup spindles, they will machine them to fit their disc brake kits for a small fee.
But, they still won't fit an axle set up for ford kingpins and spindles..

I know it's stuck way at the back of the Tech-O-Matic, but THIS (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=88300&page=1&view=collaps ed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1) article will help.

If it doesn't cover your combo of parts exactly, it will give you a good idea of what is possible, and the methods used when swapping spindles and brakes.

I think the stuff you see in Speedway is to put Chevy brakes on their tube axles. I had ask a similar question along time ago on putting them on a Ford axle. After getting everyones input about it, I decided it was'nt worth going that route.
