I am looking at a
Lincoln 175T- which has 5 stepped power settings
If any of you guys use stepped power control machines for sheet metal I want to know if the stepped settings make it difficult to work on thinner material. I am used to triggering my welds anyway with light gage stuff
but if this continuous control feature allows you to crank it way down for sheet metal and makes your whole life that much better. . . .well, then, I'll keep looking until I find something with that feature.
a Lincoln 175Plus- which has continuous power control is like $200 more. . OUCH!

Does anybody here WELD anymore?
Or do you all just pine away for one more good Horton Heat album all day?
TECH advice would be greatly appreciated.

MIG welder ?
I've got a Lincoln 175 somethingorother.
220 volt MIG.
2 knobs,1 multiposition A,B,C... for heat range.
The other adjusts wire speed.
I use the chart included to set the machine for the material thickness.
Works fine.

Thanks, yes mig. It sounds like the "somethingorother" is the same as the 175T.

Unfortunately,I havn't used it as much as I would have liked.
Buy extra contact tips(they come in different sizes to match the wire diameter),
some nozzle dip,and anti-spatter spray.
im not that familiar with lincoln, but ive got a miller that has a 'continuous' control. i love it..talk to the salesperson your getting it from. explain what you want to do with it and he should be able to tell you if you need that feature or not. $200.00 is alot of money..but if you figure out you need it in 2 months it'll really suck more than spending the cash now...
later.
I bought my Millermatic 175 from here. Great to deal with.
Infinite wire speed, great welder..

If I understand correctly, you are asking whether a MIG with 5 preset amp settings is a pain in the ass compared to one that has a dial that can select any amp setting that the machine can handle ?
If that's your question, its gonna depend on what the preset settings are compared to the dial settings.
e.g. The lowest preset is 30 amps, but the other model can dial down to 20 amps.
Do you have those specs ? (if you don't, it is probably all available online at the Lincoln web site)

Well I use a small 110V Lincoln mig with flux core wire and gas. Depending on the application I'm using it on determines if I use the gas also. On body panels I like this set up because it lays a flat bead on it which means less grinding to do.
The guys around here liked it when they used it on there stuff like that.
