What size do you go with, I tried 50% and still huge, gonna try 75%, have you tried to custom size by pixels?

Resizing as a percentage takes a bit of experimenting. Or you need to know the original images's dimensions, the size you want to resize it to, and then you have to do a little math to figure the percentage desired.
It seems easier to me to do a custom resize to specific pixel dimensions, if that's an option. For display in a forum post 640x480 pixels is usually big enough. The pixel dimensions are stated as width x height in pixels.
Most image resizing tools will let you enter both the desired width and height dimensions. But often times if you set only one dimension it will automatically set the other. Just make sure to look for an option that says something like "maintain aspect ratio" or "keep width to height proportion same as original image" and click the check box to do so. This should keep your pictures from being distorted vertically or horizontally. :D
