for those that dont know, i totalled my blazer last month...well i didnt....a "person" driving a minivan on his cell phone ran a red light at 50mph ON THE SHOULDER and tboned me.

im good, car isnt, they totalled it. here is a pic. it doesnt look bad, but other side is wiped too..and frame is bent, motor doesnt run, suspension is screwed and interior is bad too. i THOUGHT it could be fixed, but they said the estimates are about 2k over what the cars worth...whatever.

SO. i need a new car, i know some of your guys have older daily drivers and such, but im looking for something 1999+, probably go brand new. (so try to avoid the "Get a coupe and have money left over!" posts)

i had a 2002 blazer xtreme. Right now for a month ive been driving a Toyota Prius rental..(the electric hybrid) MAN lemme tell you i really like it, gas milage is AMAZING..and i got it up to 106mph http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif i took a 1200mile round trip on 48$ worth of gas. BUT. you cant find em anywheres around here and well...the american thing, blah blah.

any suggestions on what to get?
I was thinking about a small pickup, something i can throw a bike in, i looked at the colorado, s-10, the nissan frontier (i like this one too!)

but i dont know. i tell ya, if someone had a prius on the lot, id pick it up!

looking to spend around 25k.

no clue if i should get a truck, suv or car even... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif HELP. jap american....i dont really LIKE anything (and if i so its over 30k)

the only reason id get a truck is in case i need to haul the bike somewhere (whch seems a lot lately, but i know that willstop if i get a truck!! haha)

Dude If it were me I would look into an Astro van. Mabey a 2000-2002. You could pick one up with reasonable miles in the 10-18K. I have both a 4 door Jimmy and an Astro. As far as fuel economy the Astro wins hands down. I get around 28-32 mpg depending on how I drive. The best thing is they seem to be made to haul a bike in the back. I have hauled everything from my Goldwing to sport bikes in mine with room to spare. If I remember you have some big ape hangers on your bike so you may have to take them off when you haul it but its worth it. In my opinion any way they have damn good looks. Besides you could haul all the neighborhood kids to church on Sundays. I gave 2 grand for mine its a 91 long wheel base with about 190 thousand miles on it. Its now been demoted to a winter/beater vehicle but I wont sell it cause its just to damn valuable to me.

I'm very close to getting a crew cab Canyon or Colorado Z85. If you went that route, you'd have your back seat like the Blazer and still have a bed. If you are interested in the Colorado, then go to http://www.coloradofans.com. Just like it sounds, it's all owners or prospective owners of the "Twin" trucks. I've learned quite a bit over there. I am a die hard Ranger man and for me to go GM is a big deal to me. But no Crew Cab Rangers even though they sell the exact truck I want in Brazil. Bastards and their money grubbing SUVs... Sorry, got carried away there... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Ok, look at the bright side now you probably have a vortec v6 and a tranny to put in something or to sell. You may have to reset the fuel pump relay, If it was a good engine save it if you can. That really sucks, it looks like a hard hit. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I have a clean little 1998 Ranger super cab, low miles (hell, it just sits in the garage most of the time) that I am trying to get rid of. Only want $5,500 for it. PM me if you're interested.

There are some pretty good deals on the full size half ton trucks. SUV cost more for the same basic trim/model level. Astro van is not a bad idea, especially for hauling stuff in winter time for weather protection. Also more security than an open truck bed. Astro is essentially the same drivetrain as your old Blazer.

How much driving do you do? Gas mileage may be a concern that would lead you to a smaller size vehicle. It's hard to beat a full size truck for hauling stuff though. Get a nice 2wd truck and lower it some, they ride great and look pretty good like that as well.

I just got a 01 Dodge 2500 4x4 ext cab loaded with the Cummins, automatic and 45K miles for 23,5 with a topper. This thing gets 20-21 mpg hwy & 16 city, my 98 Nissan with a 4cyl & 5 spd would get about 21 around town and 25 on the hwy and no power. The 6cyl Nissans get about 17mpg around town.
Look at the diesels, the fuel is cheaper than gas they last forever and the exhuast smells good http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Or do the long bed S-10 thing for a future bad ass ride

The Prius is an awsome car, I sold my beater S-10 to a guy who had one and he took me for a ride. I really liked it a lot, so I know where you're coming from.

I hate late model GM so I am not going to suggest anything. I don't the the Colorado is worth the dough, it's still a little truck, they're supposed to be cheap, IMHO.

How about a Subaru Baja? I use Subies as my winter cars and since you are in NJ... They're based on the Legacy. You can pretty much buy one new, thrash it forever and never put much money in 'em. Plus they're 4 doors with an open bed. Just something to think about.

I do about 45-60 miles a day average. (30 miles of that is round trip to work)

yeah, im looking at the colorado, but i have to tell you the interior lok uncomfortable...and the interior in my blazer, even though it was the "special extreme edition, blah blah blah," was chincy and uncomfortable.

right now its between the prius, and a small to midsize truck.

Id really nice a jeep cherokee, but i want a lower payment than what i had on the blazer at least. I dont want a 600$ a month payment, and i hate financing for more than 3-4 years.

i test drove all the new chryslers and was only impressed with the new 300. the crossfire blows. but the 300 (even the 6 , not the hemi) is great. but its too "nice" and grandpaish for me.. .(hey im 22)

if its a truck it has to be crew cab.

so so far its the colorado, s10, frontier, or the prius!

I think the HEMI will be an option soon in the grand cherokee if it isn't already. that would be badass.

Don't mean to preach to you, but here are my observences. Everyone I know buys new or almost new vehicles. These are the same people who always bitch cause they are working overtime and/or 2 jobs and are still living payday to payday. They have wives and kids, 2 car payments, house payments, boat or Harley, etc payments. I make the same money they do (actually less since I have turned down overtime for the past 15 years), but I am a rich man compared to them. I am 48 years old and have never had a car payment. I've been driving the same '68 Super Bee for 25 years to work. My wife hasn't worked for the last 23 years (because can we get by on my salery of $30,000/yr)drives a '67 Ply wagon. We bought an old house and had it moved on our land and fixed it up, paying cash of corse. We have a few other cars we show and enjoy including a '34 Ford coupe. We sock away 15% of what I make every month in IRA accounts and are looking foreward to a happy retirement in 8 years from now. If you are young, it's not too late to change your lifestyle, from "What I can afford" to "What I can get by with". The guys I work with who are 50 are just now coming to realize they are not going to be able to afford to retire when they would like to, because they are still in the same buying rut they were in when they were 20. No I'm not a finantual adviser, but maybe I ought to be.

should be able to get a bike in the long ones, and still have room for some brushes.
They look pretty good with airbags.

I love my truck, great gas mileage,
it's comfortable even on long trips,
and I can haul stuff too,

I'd look at a few-year-old car vs. brand new.... that way
you avoid the butthole-widening as you drive off the lot...

I have been shopping also. I drove the Magnum wagon with the Hemi.. nice car but 32k was more then I was wanting to do. Was thinking of a Canyon or Colorado but no one makes a lowering kit and everyone I talk to say they are junk...So I am now leaning towards a new standard cab short bed Chevy. with the rebates you can get one out the door for about 21 to 22k...loaded with the big 5.3L upgrade motor.

I'm a yuppie. I'm planning to sell-out as soon as possible.

About the Dakota -- so far, I love it. I read that Action Girl Stacey has had some problems with her Dakota R/T, but I have been happy with my truck. It has the 4.7L V8, which has great acceleration and torque. Friends who have driven my truck were amazed at how well it rides. I've since installed the Hotchkiss suspension kit (springs and Bilstein shocks) and it's a little more harsh, but really corners like a car and is a few inches lower than a stock truck.

Unfortunately, Dodge isn't known for good gas mileage. It was terrible when I picked up the truck -- averaging around 12 MPG. As the engine has broken in, it's better, but still much lower than most things on the road. Can't have that big engine without some sacrifice.

Overall, though, I'm really happy and think that the truck looks really good.

I do a lot of web work for a certain hybrid car. I've always thought a good tag line would be: Drive a hybrid - be a pussy.

Seriously though, I've tried lots of different daily drivers and you can't go wrong with a late model GM 1/2 ton. I am currently driving a '99 regular cab (short/wide) with a GM Performance Parts LS4 and 5-speed auto - fucker hauls ass and I have less than $13k in it and 25k miles on it.

All that said, I love those new Dodge wagons... I want one. Or how about that new mid size pick-up that Hummer is going to bring out next year? I will be all over that.

Young upwardly mobile, I think technically you are a yuppie( I only assumed the young part), but if you are going to be touchy about it, I take it back.
I have pretty much been wrenchin my whole life. I am 51 and built my first "jalopy" when I was 15, with very little help( 49 chev pickup rails, 371 olds J-2, 51 ford pickup tranny, plymouth rear end) I have owned several new trucks over the years and worked at dealerships. IMHO opinion new cars are over engineered and overpriced. Obviously you don't feel the same way and I respect that but how long to I have to be here before I can have my own opinion? Just give me some number of posts or time and I will keep my opinion to myself until then, Except it is kind of hard to post without an opinion as most posts are opinions. I made the comment out of jest and yes my sense of humor is a bit satoric at times.
You see, I LIVE old iron, not just something that is a hobby, no offense intended. I do have a newer pickup( well,a 96) but as soon as I get my 69 Ford crewcab on the road the 96 will be history. I realize not everyone has the same talents and resources.
FWIW I made $500 today and was home by 10:30, yesterday $180 by 9:30, the day before that $600 by noon. I might work tomorrow and I might not, depends on if I feel like it. So you see I am not really pouting in the corner over what you earn.
I joined up here to have a place to shoot the brezze with other gearheads. I was wrenchin and building cars before anyone came up with names like rat rod and old school. No that doesn't make me no friggin hero or better than anyone else, just different than some.

yes being a yuppie is bad.
my definition of a yuppie is someone who cheats/steals/srcews thier way to the top just for show, to flaunt thier wealth (every chance they get to talk about how much they make).
if you worked your way up the honest way and you make good money then your affluent or just plain "doing good".
after the 80's the term "yuppie" is used in a bad way.
do what you want, to each his own as long as your not harming another. everyone has thier own opinion and for that reason your never going to please everyone. i personally feel "new" vehicles have their place, not with me but for me to work on for others who want them. as for my opinion for a vehicle, the import models handle the test of time/mileage a lot better.

from what i've seen the domestic vehicles have more problems in the long run and don't get the higher mileage of the imports. also get that dex cool out of the system, flush it with water several times, then replace it with regular coolant.

GM increased initial quality reports by 33% last year to this year. That is a huge jump, but we are still below industry average. Keep in mind that that is all GM. Some vehicles are better than others. Pontiacs tend to weigh us down. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I am a yuppie (at 37?) that has worked in the car biz for about 10 yrs. Working now at a Chevy store. I would certainly buy a C1500 over a Colorado. I just sold my '96 4.3 Reg Cab with 130K+ miles on it. Didn't leak or burn a drop.

I'm currently selling my 2002 Chevy Tahoe Z71...fully loaded. It just proved to be more vehicle than I really needed. Of course, it's not totally stock but if you're interested I can tell you what I've done with it.
I'm asking $28k for it. It only has 18k miles (always driving the Impala or my motorcycle).

Much as I cannot understand someone who would post here wanting a late-model for anything other than parts, that is not the issue.
I, too, would ALWAYS recommend an import over any domestic. For further proof than already supplied, check the resale values, that tells you all you need to know, really.
Further, in honour of Carps (where IS he??), and due to overwhelming evidence (quality, resale, etc.), I'd say Toyota, though the Nissan Titan does have some real good points, as I see it.
Back around the late seventies, someone said something to the effect of "if one were to start mis-managing GM now (late 70's), the effects would not be seen for 20 years."
Hello!!!

And if you are really stuck to the domestic thing, at least do yourself the honour of test-driving all the contenders. If naught else, you'll have a good time at someone else's expense, and that ain't all bad http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My advice as much as I hate to say would be to buy a Toyota. They are well engineered and run forever, plus they have good resale.
My brother had a 2000 chev heavy duty 3/4 ton with the 6.0 and it has been a great truck. Runs like a bat outa hell and 120 thou with no problems. Half of those miles were towing and 863 Bobcat. But it is such a totally boring thing to drive, same with the 2004 dodge 1500 4 door I just had for 3 weeks. It is like they have successfully engineered out any trace of personality. You are just surrounded by this grey plastic. It is kinda like someone taking all the color out and having to drive in black and white. Just boring. I like my old F-250 when they still painted the inside of the truck to match the outside. I am much more at home with that Bahama blue interior that the gray plastic offerings on the newer ones. Probably just oldfartism.

And I really didn't think yuppie wass a dirty word, I still thought it meant what it originally did and didn't realize it had morphed into a total slam.

No big deal, bad day at work yesterday = bad attitude. It is touchy for me though because I have never been handed anything and have busted ass from 16 to now and take a lot of pride in my new cars as well as the old ones. no worries, maybe I am a yuppie, but is that a bad thing? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

He, that's cool. Anyone who busts but for what they get is ok, I never meant to insinuate otherwise.
I have been there and done that and I suppose I was a Yuppie too. But once I did give it all up in 94 and spent a year at my cabin in Alaska with no payments and just doing whatever I felt like, mostly snowmobiling. Best dam year of my life-so far. If it hadn't been for that white woman coming along and ruining it all.lol

I do agree on the Toyota. Had a 2000 Tundra ran that thing 70 miles a day, turned it into the dealership with 172k miles. They sold it less than a week later for $18500.00. Excellent truck, another note, my pops has a 90 toyota with almost 700k miles on it and has only gone thru 2 clutches, brakes and tires. Excellent vehicles.

I get the GM family discount which amounts to almost $4000. I can't say no to that, especially when I like the Colorados.

I drove a Nissan S/C Frontier last year, but it's priced similarly to the Colorado. I like the exterior but the dash looks cartoony to me. Really with that discount, I can't afford to not get a Colorado or a Canyon.

It ain't a truck, but I can reccomend without a doubt the Mercury Cougar.
While I feel an Eliminator version would have been cool, the normal 99-02 is avery good, dependable ride, with a fair v6 engine, and a very good, comfortable 2 person car. The rear seats are miniscule, but the trunk has 24 cubic feet of space. It's a good car, I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

Seriously? My girlfriend has one, '99 V6/auto. I find it cramped, the seats suck, it seems to have no room(with the exception of the trunk), and at it's best gets about 25 mpg with a lot of highway driving.(If I'm going to drive a small car, it better get good gas milage!) When you put the front seat forward to get in the rear, it completely resets itself, so it takes awhile to figure out your exact old placement. I'd never reccommend one to anybody! What else can I bitch about......;)

Ryan, if I could find a set up like you have I would buy it in a second.. Down here in the south, standard cab short bed are hard to get unless you want a v6 work truck with no power anything... Must ave a V8 in a truck...

Sorry, but you're not special. Click on FAQ at the top of the page, and you can answer most of your questions about the board. You barely disturbed the bees....

Geez I didn't know calling someone a yuppy was going to start a flame war. It was supposed to be more of the kind of jab I see you guys giving each other than an insult.
I did have a little trouble getting on and Ryan helped me out. If I missed any decorum on the intro it was an accident. I am kind of new to the computer and don't know my way around like most of you. I thought I did introduce myself, maybe it was in the wrong place.
But I guess if I was here a while I could talk like you and that would be OK?
My intent was not to piss any one off and since I did I appologize.
I will say this; if anyone talked like that to my face one of use wouldn't be getting up and I haven't had to do that in 24 years.

Ok well maybe I overreacted, but I haven't been going around gentrifying historic districts or wearing polo shirts and dockers. It's just not a nice word. And really you got off pretty lite. But if you can make it through that you'll probably make it alright.

Here's a shot of my truck. The LS4 runs like mad, but it did take some computer time to get the 5-spd auto from the same vette to shift appropriately... Big weight difference there. GM Performance parts did all of the work inhouse as this truck was a test mule...

This is the 4th or 5th late model GM 1/2 I've owned. To be honest, I think I was born to drive these things. I grew up driving 50's and 60's era sedans, so I have to have a lot of interior "width". No one does this better than GM...

I also really like the motors. Even in stock form these trucks run pretty damn good.

not necessarily true. Sometimes you can catch dealerships with 0% financing. I got my Tahoe that way (and with the GM discount).

Nonetheless, I just need a beater pickup...older or newer....as soon as I sell the Tahoe.

Agree with you Ryan..I rented one in 2000 while my 4Runner was in the body shop, liked it so well I ended up buying a new one.(GMC Z71 model), never had to go back to the dealer for any repairs in 65,000 miles. It would easily break the tires loose if you took off a little deep in the throttle. Can't imagine an LS4. I'm a big fan of Toyotas, and still have one for a daily, But now the quality of at least the GM trucks is right there with anybodys, and the gas mileage is way better than my wifes Landcruiser.

Well all this talk about new rides.. I went out tonight and bought my first very new car. Its a 2004 black chevy shortbed standard cab with the 5.3L and tow package. (traded in my 2000 crewcab shortbed with the 7.4L motor).. I have wanted a standard cab shortbed for more years then I can remember, finally got to the point where I could buy a new car (preferred a early model but never could find a clean on I could afford).. so Tongiht I have my truck... I plan to lower it and put wheels on it someday, nice and clean...

Ryan, I like you ride... When you say it was a testmule, did Detroit do it or the local Dealership
