Well Nads and I got the rear shocks finished. I took the GB over to his place last night to sit back and have a look at our work.
His wife asked for a ride. I said of course and away we went. Everything was great until we were passing a car and HERE WE GO AGAIN. The front end let lose and took off like two basket balls held together by a rope.....we slowed to a roll and went back looking for the lost hub cap.
We nere found the cap and went back to Nads to have a look see.
The only thing we could find wrong is as follows.
the draglink hyme joints are tighted down fine but the roller balls are sloppy and all over the place???
As well the Vega box was lose again...We found that the frame is sinking in on itself due to the stress.. Im gonna get some steel tube inserts for the box mount to correct that and order up some new hymes and Ill hit the roads again for another high MPH test drive.
man this is getting old..
this is like a mexican soap opera. I cant understand a thing and it seems to never end!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What is your caster angle set at?

Do you still have those radials you can throw on it to take the bias tires out of the equation?

I thought a small UFO landed next to my shop last night - want your cap back? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A stock vehicle will develop that crazy wobble if parts are worn. I've been in early Econoline vans that would do it.
Replace the parts that are sloppy and add crush sleeves to the frame so the box doesn't loosen up again.
You'll be A-OK.
Hmmm...I MEAN the GB will! YOU'RE hopeless!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif LoL

She looks GREAT Mike! Nice work.

The draglink heims are really sloppy, but they're brand new. The car's probably only been driven 50 miles. Maybe they got damaged by the previous wobbles.
One of the bolts on the steering box was almost finger tight.
I think when the framerail is reinforced with tubing it should OK.
Also Mike I think the steering box itself feels worn.

Ain't nothing but a thing Mike, the problem will be gone by a process of elimination.
I've been there, it took me a while to track it down too, and I was scared shitless for months afterwards thinking the "wobbles" would be back at any moment.

not a trad vehicle, but I had a hell of a time with wobbles on my 96 Jeep Cherokee when I first bought it with the dinky 215 tires on it. Anytime I approached 55mph, it would shake itself to death - slowing down was the only way to keep it from doing that. I replaced the tires with 235s and made sure the goons at Goodyear balanced the tires on the wheels, and havent had a problem since. They said they inspected the old tires and found a busted cord, said it happens all the time on new tires. May want to double check the tires after you make sure the frame and steering are up to par.

If your hyme ends are worn out after 50 miles why order more? I'd try to use tie rod ends instead. My point is, if you think that's where the problem may have come from, why replace it with the same thing you think caused the problem? Good luck man.

theres over 175 miles and Im not sure if the original bouncing caused the hymes to go bad or the were just bad to start with. Im replacing them just because its a good idea.
El Mosquito had them same set up and never wore any hymes out ever...

The mosquito was built with more attention to detail...and parts with exacting tollerances. you can't compare it to the bean.

Once you have the steering and heims sorted out, try adding a steering damper.

SoCal sells them, or you can get one at your local VW supplier which should be cheaper.

Here's an R&C article that shows how to set one up ...
