Man, we were heading home from the Tue. night THEM! thing and a skunk decided to play chicken and lost.
Smelly little creep (not K&R), we pulled over at a car wash and Eric hosed it off...just a slight smell.
We were cracking up and were thinking how much it would suck to hit one just right in a open car. I bet one of you has done that...bet that stunk!

Many years ago my cousin had a 34 Ford roadster that was chopped and channeled, full fendered, and had a 3-window coupe top welded on it.Was built in the early 50's and was a neat car.
We were getting it ready for a car show(if I remember right, the Fly-Wheels show in Braintree Mass in 60 or 61)and had spent a good part of the day cleaning it up top and bottom.
It was night by the time we finished and we decided to make a run to the coffee shop up on the highway to get a coffee and relax. We wound up taking a longer run just because it was a nice night.
Coming back down Route 95(a 4 lane on either side highway)we're clicking along pretty good when Dick spies an animal trying to cross the road.He moves over a lane and so does the animal .Again he moves over and again so does the animal. Now we're running out of lanes and the animal(determined now to be a,"wood pussy")is running out of luck.Dick tries to swerve back towards the center of the road just as the skunk reverses direction!THUMP!and then a series of thumps as Mr. Skunk tries to wrap himself around the right rear wheel well! And then that horrendous smell of burning tires as he explodes under the fender.
Long story short;we try hosing him out and hanging "hooker trees" all over the car to no avail. The car reeked for a month and every time it rained the stench returned with a vengeance.
Naturally the next day was hot and although we got the car in the show, the smell was so bad they asked us to leave!
I imagine that old 34 still smells whereever it is today.

Well, if we are telling skunk stories. In 67 or 68 a bunch of us were hanging out uptown, sitting on the cars, sneaking sips of Coors when the local constabulary wasn't in view, you guys who grew up in rural America know what I'm talking about), when a skunk ran out on main street.
One of our bunch who had recently gotten married, and who had had a lot more to drink than the rest of us, started telling everyone that if you sneak up on them and grab thier tail, and get them off the ground, they can't spray.
Naturally, he was told that he was full of shit and we had never heard of such a thing, Sooo... off goes Red to prove us wrong. We never got a chance to find out if his theory was sound. Just as he reached to grab the skunks tail he caught a full load right in the face and upper torso. We spent a couple dollars worth of quarters at the car wash ON RED.
He then went home and crawled in bed with his new bride. We always wondered why that one didn't last. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Byron, I think I can help out here, sounds like a case of skunkslaughter to me. If he pleads guilty, he'll only get one week of probation.
It is my experience that you REALLY have to piss a skunk off to make him spray. The town I went to college in was overrun with skunks at certain times of the year, and I never saw one spray. Some of my asshole friends would throw bottles at them and rocks and all kinds of stuff, but they never sprayed.
Of course, none of them ever tried to go over and grab one's tail!

Back in high school we tried to always beat the time of our runs to the next town over. I was running around 110 in my 81 grand prix when I nailed one. Smeared skunk was all over the bottom of the car. As soon as we got to town I went to the car wash and attempetd to hose the bottom of the car off, but it sat so low I couldn't really get a good shot at it.
It was a really crowded night on the main drag so no one really could tell where the smell was coming from. It was funny watching everyone holding their noses though. We smoked stogie's and "other" materials so we couldn't smell it too bad inside the car. Talk about some skunk weed!
