View Full Version : WHAT DOES THE H.A.M.B MEAN TO YOU?

DIRTYT
07-20-2004, 11:11 PM
Well, I have been thinking about making this post for some time now. The thing that made me do it is the post on "how cool" Denise is. And let me be the 30.0000 to say that she is probably the coolest nicest most hard-core hot rod chick dude or what have you that will ever come to be. Not only does she make me and Fat hack a care package for out road trip she finds me a great place to get my chevy back on the road in time for the drags.
Now IM only 23 years old and have yet to meet or see all the people places and things that IM sure I will see. But let me just say this. I know for a fact that I will never find a group of people like the HAMB. How many people do u know that will give you an engine without ever meeting you. How many friends do u have that will come together for a good cause. Or for a good time with no strings attached. I don't know about you but until I came on the HAMB i have not seen these types of people in the world. It amazes me every time how much the people on this site care for one another and are willing to give.
I guess my point with all this is just to put into words how much every one and this site mean to me. Call me cheesy if u want call me a pussy if u want but, I know at least once every one on here has felt the same way. So lets here your story. No matter how small or how big of a deal its been. Let the new guys understand so they don't get pissed and take off. At first I was kinda pissed about the intro thing but now I understand why its must. and I hope those that are lurking in the shadows thinking about joining understand this. Once you become part of the HAMB you better be in it for the right reasons. Just last night I was chatting with Denise about all the great things that have come out of the HAMB. And we both agreed that without Ryan creating this place it would be a lot harder to do what we do and have fun at it. So any one else want to get sappy?

The hamb is a place where you can get advise,or give it,and most of the time people know what you are talking about. Unlike some car guy off the street who just wants to tell you about his 409 g.t.o.with a big block, hemi 4 speed, posi, and a high stall, burning jp-4 jet fuel,'cause it had 20 to one compression!! It's better than hanging out at your favorie bar,or watching some tv reality-show nonsense. The people here are great. The info here is great, and those Michigan girls are the finest in the world!! ,Glenn

This ain't real sappy or emotional, so it may not qualify, but I was just thinking yesterday how I THOUGHT I knew something about cars until I got on the HAMB. Boy was I wrong.

To have so many people with so much collective knowledge in one place to discuss a common passion is an amazing resource, pass time and community.

It's been said here hundreds of times in the short time that I've been around, but I don't think it can be said often enough. Thank God for the HAMB.

And, maybe more to the point: Thanks Ryan; for the HAMB.

I can't agree more!!!
People who don't know me, and have never met me helped out for no other reason than we all share the same interest and values. I can't thank the HAMB enough and Ryan for creating this place. And for keeping it going even though it must be a financial burden as well as a time burden. Viva la HAMB!

Ask an easy question.....
There are a heap of answers, but hooking up (both in the flesh and over the net) with some kool folks with similar (note similar) interests, and the exchange of knowledge and info that goes on here daily makes it pretty hard to be away from for too long, always the concern you might miss out on something you needed to know.......

To be honest, though, the HAMB is a place to put my mind at ease that all is well with the world, and that there are other sane people here. I'm going through a tough time in my life as I leave home, and I'm struggling with my beliefs. The HAMB helps me come to grips with life. Anyway, no tissues here, the HAMB is a great place to meet likeminded folks, and to bench race, etc.

For me, it's finding a bunch of like-minded people to share my interest in.
Having breakfast with old and new friends from near and far.
Jabbing people and getting jabbed. Drama baby, drama. Sometimes over the top but hey, that's what makes it what it is.
Opinions, whether you asked for them or not.
Selling a car to a HAMB lurker, buying a car from a HAMBer and trading cars with a HAMBer.
And having the most fun at a car gathering I've ever had.
I'll take a 150 HAMB cars over 1500 street rods any day.
Thanks to the HAMB (so far) I've been to The Hot Rod Rumble, Broken Dream Kruise and the Motorcity Billetproof. I hope this ride never ends.

What does HAMB mean to me? Hard question to answer, had more than one HAMBer call me an idiot, because I am a Chevy lover. They even ridicule me for giving props to someone that can write better than me. I have two hamb actions going on now because I love this site so much I am willing to take the abuse. Can we all reach out and give on big hug!! (sniff)

In all realism, the H.A.M.B. to me is the wise making the dumb wiser, a place where tradition flows like a never ending river, where the love of one thing brings people together, where HELP is not something of the past and widely used w/out reason or hesitation. The H.A.M.B. is a place where people make friends and nothing more.

In the last month I have met in person a few of you H.A.M.B.ers and without hesitation, its amazing (no matter what we may look like or smell like) a bond can be made instantaneously.

I would like to personally thank Ryan for this place and for the rest of you all, for your parts help, knowledge and dedication to a tradition that SHOULD live on!!!!

merc you sing beautifully and damn people really care on here.

It's a great place to show that there are people in same situations. Building backyard rods. true do-it-yourselfers ... Its a good place to sit and relax, share a laugh and learn. (sounds a lil like school but the teachers always so mean lol)

But one thing we all have in common or atleast i think we do is blood, sweat and tears workin on our cars.

this is why I am proud to say that I am not only an American but also a HAMBer.

thanks,
Johnny

I like the fact that there are so many people with knowledge is so many areas, you could literaly build a car from scratch off of this board. It's nice to see in todays society there is a close group of people willing to share ideas and critisism. To me, saying that you are an active member on the HAMB is an honer and a priviledge.
Ok. nuff sappy shit. In other words, big thanks to Ryan for allowing us all a huge playground to get dirty in!

A place for ggod info on how to!

A place for meeting great people with like minds - however sick that is!

A place to spend way too much time.

A place to plan a thrash - the Big Olds thrash was amazing. Friends na strangers all working together to one common goal - getting the Big Olds together.

Thats what its all about.

What they all said! Did I mention addiction?

Fat Hack
07-21-2004, 09:03 AM
It's about new friends and old cars...and sharing one's individual knowledge, talents and abilities with others working towards the same goal. It's one giant circle of friends who help and support one another, in all aspects of life, and do their best to make one another's Dreams come true!

From the swapping of parts, tech and goodwill...to new friendships created daily...to the comfort one can take in knowing that any question will be answered swiftly and accurately...the HAMB provides a sanctuary of sorts for the relatively few folks who elect to keep old tin, hot rods and the traditional values that surround them alive in an ever-changing world.

You'll come to know the names...and learn the faces and personalities behind them. You'll meet new people and go places and do things you never would have otherwise. You'll trade off your old parts for the pieces you need to complete your project. You'll come together when a fellow HAMBer is in need of help or comfort, and you'll enjoy a fellowship that is second to none!

In short...it's a small group of like minded folk working, laughing and interacting with each other...and it'll make ya proud to be a part of something so special! It's different things to different people, but in general...it comes down to...friends.

The previous posts just about cover the essence of the HAMB. I don't know about anyone else but I've stopped watching TV, there isn't anything on that can come close to the HAMB. I just feel that even with the Drama (which is usually totally unnecessary) this place gives aid and comfort to anyone who is serious about building cars and maintaining them. Where can you find the wealth of information and experience that's available here? If there is another place I don't know about it.
Bottom line, Ryan has started something that gathers all of the elements of human interaction and given it a car theme. THANKS, RYAN!!!

I've met a lot of pretty good folks here in the last year. Some of 'em even have faces. Had a chance to remember some things that I thought I forgot, and learn some things that I thought I already knew.
Probably meeting good folks is the best part. There are a lot of people here young and old alike that are just like the guys I came up around.

It means, I can meet up with a bunch of people I've never met in person at show for a weekend, and feel like I've known them for years.

It's a place that reminds me I'm not crazy for wanting a gasser with a straight axle, or an FED, or a roadster with a 90hp Flathead or for building a car that's only going to hold one person. It's a place that gives me the freedom to do what I want to do with out feeling like an outcast.

It's a place where I can learn something new almost daily.

I've given this alot of thought, not only last nite and today, but in the past as well. The HAMB means so much to so many people it's alittle overwhelming sometimes that "it's" so powerful. This might sound morbid but what if something, God forbid, should ever happen to Ryan. Is there a plan to keep the HAMB operational? Maybe this isn't the time or place to even bring something like this up, but just thinking about how many like minded folks from all over the world, that have been brought together under one roof, is mindboggling. I can't imagine ever losing the ability to touch base, any time, nite or day, with hundreds, no thousands of hot rodders that I call friends.

The common thread we all share is hot rods and customs but I really don't look at this as strickly a car site, this is a site about people, friends actually. This is a site where my friends all hang out, a place where most of us call "home" on the internet.

Like everyone else I have met many, many friends thru the HAMB and even became closer to local car buds that I already knew. I've gone to some of the coolest car shows and events any where in the country because of the HAMB, and this past spring, HAMB guys all came together one day and thrashed big time on Big Olds. Because of the HAMB, Big Olds is closer to being completed then I ever thought possible (super-secret details will be revealed this winter http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) On top of all this, I've learned a thing or two regarding hot rods along the way.

I love you all, VIVA LA HAMB!

What else is so funny about the HAMB is that every person I've met looked exactly as I imagined them.
I was downright shocked when I met rashy because he looks exactly like germ.

I have no idea what Ryan looks like, but in my mind he's a debonair '30s looking guy, kinda like Errol Flynn with a pencil thin moustache.

It's a real community that was made possible by the net. Refreshingly it's not a "mass media, buy this, buy that" mess like what most of the net has turned into.

I appreciate all those posters who put up pics and reports of all the car events from around the world. Where else can you get a tour of an event so quickly?

As for building, this is a great place for getting real world tips.

The HAMB means so much to me it's almost perverse. It's astounding to me how much I've been able to learn in so little time just by coming here and reading posts. Although I'm from a "hot rod family" I've only had Faye since last October so I'm pretty green campared to most people on this board. I've had so much to learn and a million questions to ask. Just about everything I needed to do so far was made a million times easier because I could come here to ask questions. My Dad and his friends have be profoundly helpful but there's plenty of times (especially with respect to the 216/235) where even my Dad urged me to ask the "HAMB folks" a question he couldn't answer.

Just the other day I needed to find a carb spacer. I spent about an hour searching websites/making calls and didn't turn one up so I came here and asked where to get one. Just minutes after I posted my question replies started rolling in (even how to make one from PLYWOOD!)and ultimately I found a good online lead for the future and a FREE spacer on the way from rocket88 (he wouldn't even let me pay shipping!). That little act of kindness is not something you find on the average message board and that's what makes the HAMB a community of friends not a room full of strangers. Here's a short list of the direct benefits of my HAMB memebership.

- a donated cylinder head to replace the cracked one on my 235
- a donated carb spacer
- a great place to camp and a fantastic time with HAMBErs at FSNRA (York)
- A home for my Chrysler project with the proceeds going to getting Faye back on the road
- the Jalopy Showdown!
- help and critique on my pinstriping
- a headlight ring
- the encouragement and support that given me the confidence to DO IT MYSELF!
- MANY MANY FRIENDS!

AND SO MUCH MORE!

I only hope that someday I'm able to return the favor for a HAMBer in need. I feel like it's my duty to share what I've learned with others and to be able to answer the call for help when it's needed.

I love you HAMB. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's a community of freinds, aquaintances, and folks one knows only by what they say, do or display on the board. It spans the world, bringing poeple together who would never know their brothers and sisters in this pursiut of lifestyle.
I have made some freinds around the world. I learned some things about folks who were my freinds previous to the HAMB when I didn't know their HAMB names. There are many things I have learned here from folks who have done alot more of this than me. This place, (think about that, we call it a place, but it only exists in cyberspace...and all over the world with no actual location) has great humor, tech, art, oppertunities and yes, the drama.

It’s a place I like because its mostly full of like minded people. Most of the car people I know around town here are into. 350 – 350 – 9”- mustang 2 – A/C. If you’re into that sorry but I think all that is just over done and boring. Why turn a neat old car into a camero? Just go buy a camero w A/C. For me all the charm of the old car is gone when it’s totally updated. After building the 40 for my dad ( just like the one he had in 56 ) three years ago. I learned that an old V8 ford runs pretty dam good with out all the tredy/spendy bullshit and it’s a lot more fun to. I guess I must have come on here so I could talk to people I can relate to. I check the HAMB constantly whenever I'm home - sometimes at work too. I've met some cool folks I never would have before & I'm sure I'll meet more.

Right now, I've got more ideas than time, but I still come here for my "fix" & inspiration. It's how I relax after a fairly stressful daily grind.

I don't care for the drama or the cliques, but that's exactly what makes it real. If we all got along & agreed on everything, it wouldn't be much fun & we'd all be driving plastic cars with 350/350/9" & AC/PW 1-800 mobiles.

I'll echo the sentiment:
Thanks, Ryan!

The thing I like the most, other than what has been said previously, is that everyone is basically on a level playing field. You can ask anybody here about anything and it can be a Nobody like me all the way up to a Somebody like RF or Cole (There's more Somebodies out there and at least ONE Knowbody, but my brain is dead today). Cole was even kind enough to answer a few questions a while back even though I think he's this Master of Metal and I'm a nobody with a few wrenches laying around. He did teach me one very important thing and I try to live by that in relation to the car stuff. So this place is great where you get to talk to everybody and anybody (not always a good thing, as we've seen) and I think it's pretty damn cool.

Thanks Ryan!

When I first found this place I thought "My Gawd, what a sick bunch ok fkers!! You mean there are a couple thousand sickos out there just like me? Finally, after 50 some odd years on earth I found a bunch of folks that make me feel normal!!" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Now the count is up to what, 5000 or so of us? Really scary!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
If my wife ever divorces me it will be because of the hour or two I spend on the HAMB every night. I even convinced her to make the 10 hr or so drive to the drags with me so I can meet and hang out with a bunch of the HAMB brothers & sisters. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Somehow this place gives me a daily, much needed dose of sanity. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

THE HAMB IS LIKE AN ELEVATOR......................... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
YOU stroll up to the open door, and youhave heard of the dangers..........BUT you enter.
Then it is that you discover, there are some strangers in there!!!!!!
Heck!.....You feel a little uneasy......
-Should I act tough or maybe introduce myself?Im not too sure which at this point......
Now a friendly type goes out of his way to welcome you.
Next a Crotchety old BASTARD makes a snide remark and gives you "the look"....
Damn!!Damn!....what di I get on here for???????????? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Just as you thought you may be abl;e to cope,THE GOD DAMNED thing Sticks at that LEVEL and you're stuck there with all these Fuckin strangers.........
Now ,after a while, you are a little more at ease with this little assortment of charactersd......
The old crotchety BASTARD-smiles and gives you a stick of gum....Does he WANT SEX!!!!? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
ORRRRRR is he mellowing a little
the nice person, you thought was eagerly welcoming you in.......suddenly suprises you by picking your pocket!!!!
Then just as you have lost all hope in getting OFF this abomination known as PROGRESS.....!!!!
It screetches to a slow scraping squealing start and Comes back down to the Level that you entered that open door at.......
You now realize its time to leave.....
Damn you have bonded with your comrades you have been trapped with there on the Device that was made to lift you up and LET YOU DOWN...... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif!!!!!
You think to yourself-I am so fuckin glad to get OFF this SUMBITCH!!!*^#=,
BUT wait!!!Now you think-
HELL-I'm gonna miss that one OR TWO persons I made friends with.....

Well kids-it's as I said-----and as your Mother always told you-----Don't TALK TO STRANGERS!!!
AND DONT TAKE CANDY FROM EM EITHER!!!!!they'll want somethin from you.....Or do they?????

Man, what the H.A.M.B. means to me is probably what a LOT of people feel...

I joined up here back in '99, after seeing a link to it on something at Hangin Dice in FT Smith, I was surprised to see photos of not just ONE of my cars here, but TWO of them. Ryan even had the shot of Jesse sittin by my "corvecayne" on his "atomic industry" site...

Before long, I discovered that there was a LOT of information here, people who had been there and done that and told the pros and cons of it so I wouldnt make the same screw ups with my own rides.

The people you find on the H.A.M.B. are the closest thing to friends that you can find with internet aquaintences, what else but friend can you call someone who goes out of their way to help those of us in need? The things I have seen here, most recently the situation in Tulsa, do nothing but show me what a great bunch of people we have on the HAMB...

There are some who will say that they dont like it here, so be it. They earned their own rejection by coming on here thinking it was like any other internet forum..it's not, most of us have known each other, either in real life, or just on here for years, the "hazing" we give to newbies doesn't run everyone off, the Old Timers here welcome the young people in more so than in the car clubs I have seen,
we may do a little fightin amongst ourselves, but when it comes down to it, we still stick together...

I dont really know how to put it into a sentence, what the H.A.M.B. means to me, ad the only way I know to describe it doesnt seem to give it enough revernce..but here goes. It's like the old hangout back home where we would gather (loiter they call it nowadays) and talk about whatever, learn a little, hook up for races, swap cars n parts....

My Haunt, My Hangout....not quite home, but damn near it.
