I think COLE could not have said it more perfectly when he said "hardest part is picking what colors to paint" on a different thread. i am right there with him. Even though paint for me is a little ways off, I cant stop thinking about it and it is driving me nuts. The hardest part is this and I am curious to know what everyone thinks: On a mid 50's car, does it look better to break up the paint via the side trim and go with a 2 tone paint job, or does it look better one solid color. I know it should be an individual thing, I just want ideas....
I am posting pix of what the hell I am talking about....

With that particular trim, I say do the 2 tone thing...it'll look really swanky! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I know my reply dont mean much cause I am a FNG but ,I also think the 2 tone would be classy.

Two-tone paint gives the car more of a '50's theme.

FWIW, most stock two-tone combos had the lighter color on top because putting the darker color on top makes the car look top-heavy. Give it a try & you'll see what I mean.

I like both, as long as the colors stay more organic on a two-tone job: I.E. Brown+Cream, etc.
With solid colors, roofs, etc, the metalflakes look preyy kool.

Solid colors -- especially solid DARK colors -- look more formal/sophisticated/understated. Two-tones, especially when separated by the side trim, scream '50s as loud as a poodle skirt. In 1960, Pontiac did some really neat 2-tones separating the top color from the rest of the body, and using closely related ("analagous") colors: silver over charcoal, pale gold over metallic brown. Those looked really slick.

I'm not clear what your car is. '55 Pontiac or Chev? If you want a nostalgia car, use the side trim to divide the colors, and use colors with a lot of contrast: black/silver, red/white -- like that. If you want a more contemporary look, use a solid color or 2-tone the roof only, using an analagous color to the body.

Is it my eyes or is the car two tone now? Looks like dark purple above the side trim and top with the rest black. I like that look.

2-tone. I'd use 2 shades of the same color.
