I have a 49 chevy, 3 on the tree...the linkage to the tranny keeps getting stuck. I have heard that this is a common thing, is there anything that I can do to fix this? Something fairly cheap...

You might be able to adjust it. I don't know on the Chevies, but my Ford has a couple of adjusting nuts where the linkage goes into the firewall.

sometimes a washer or two will take out some of the slack, maybe you could try to find some of those bushings like they use on hurst shifter linkage.are you following the instructions? do you have the instructions? typically, you put the thing in neutral,or close to it,then unhook both of the linkage rods from the trans.next you take a 1/4" drill bit and insert it into the hole where both shifter arms come out of the steering column (it will be covered by a blob of grease and hard to see probably) then when you've done that you adjust the linkage rods so they slide into the shift levers on the side of the trans.all that's left is to put the cotter pins/bolts etc. back where they belong and remove the 1/4" drill bit.should be good to go.i once bought a '54 Hudson for cheap cuz the dummy who owned it had it stuck in 1st gear.i popped the hood, yanked it into neutral, paid the guy,and drove it home-george

as anyone at theHAMB Drags '03 can testify- I am the master of hangin it in LOW GEAR.... in my '58ElCaminohttp://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
But what I had to do to correct that was adjust the two levers at the end of column.
the linkage needs to be solid and tight fitting at the trans end too.
I adjusted them startin with trying to get the two even with each other.
Then I would adjust the second/high linkage one turn at a time till I got it where it shifted slick.
ended up haveing to have the second/high lever slightly higher up than the low/reverse lever was when setting in NEUTRAL.
that allowed the "pin"to slip into the 2nd/hi lever better when you shifted from low quickly[ as you are pulling UP] at that time and it[lo lever] naturally wants to be "ahead of" instead of "in line" with 2nd/high lever....
Confused yet? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
