Okay, you all know Im building a Merc. Flattie. At this point in time, it going to cost me too much to get it going and ready for the car. Thanks to Link here on the Hamb, I picked up a Ford 300 Inline 6 motor w/ 3 speed/overdrive.
Should I run the inliner or just wait for the merc. flattie to be done.
My only issue w/ the inliner is its another 7 - 10" longer than the flathead so the cowl of the roadster will have to be pushed back and the whole wheel base stretched back...(any picts of inliner roadsters????)
I also came across this setup for cheap and could not pass it up...it would look bitchen on the Inliner...including split exh. manifolds...

The 300 Ford is a stout motor, and can make serious hp with some work. Later models had those split manifolds you were talking about. Go for it.
There are several articles available about building these motors for performance. There was one in an early Petersen Engines Annual that talked about the motor Ak Miller used to go a buck fifty at B'ville in a Mustang. Would send you the article, but it escaped some time in the last thirty five years.....
Not sure, but I think that the bellhousing may adapt to the same stuff as a small block Ford.... that means four- and five-speeds, or plenty of good automatics available.

i think if you used half the planned budget for the flattie you'd get twice the horsewpower from the inline...

do you think extending the car 7-10 more inches will make it look funny or just plain stupid?
(yelling) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif does anyone have any picts of roadsters w/ inliners in them?

Ford's inline 300 is a bomb for torque at low rpms...even though I love the flathead I'd have to say be unique and go with the inliner...that intake is bitchin'
(Clifford performance makes a lot of stuff for inliners)
here is a pic of a coupe with an inline

i think it looks funny when the hood line is too long just the same as when people mount the shell infront of the cross member

i had a 300 6yl. in a truck a while back. i was very happy with it. made good power and still got decent mileage to boot. with gas prices the way they are i'd run the six. thwey look cool as hell to. my 62 wagon still has the six in it. i drive the hell out of it too.

Those inlines are as reliable as the family dog. You can drive one of those anywhere in the country without fear, because you can buy parts for them at any parts store, coast to coast. Flattys are cool and all, but you can't say it's easy to find parts for them at 8 o-clock on a Sunday evening like that 300.

300 Ford? I grew up around those things!
Now THATS an inliner!
Not sure what the "horse"power is but they all look like the horses pulling the BUD wagon, I guarantee!!!
If you can fit it in there you'll be happy and DIFFERENT.
That motor can give even medium sized V8's a bad name when it comes to torque!
Go for it!

For a few ideas go to fordsix.com. These guys are all over Ford 6's. The 240/300 six uses the same bellhousing as the 302. I'm going to use one in my 41 Chevy PU. For a roadster I would consider the 240" version. Shorter stroke and you can lighten the crank and rev the hell out fo them. Just my $.02 worth. PM me if you need any help.

Heck yeh use the six but with that intake you'd have to build a really wild looking set of headers, kinda like the RED BARON.

Post a picture of the roadster and I'll tell you if it looks wierd. I have a lot of opinions and I don't mind sharing them.

Dude run the six! They have torque for days and look cool as hell! Tons of dress up shit for 'em too. Plus you'll get double the power out of the six for less than half the dough to rebuild the flaty. Not to mention reliability.
Oh and if you don't run that motor...I want that trans back, I gave you an O.D. trans, damn I must be slippin' in my old age! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
JUST KIDDIN', but dude run the six they kick ass. Call me if you have any questions or need some parts.
