1 more question to the day!
The carb spacer one on my new engine is broken in half... Anyone know where I can get another one? I'm assuming that whatever I find won't be bakelite but I have no idea what I'm looking for other than that.
This is the one on my 235 engine.

I think I've got an extra one kicking around the shop.
They came stock on Canadian Pontiac 261's. Put them on a 235 and they're good for a couple more mpg's. I might have one floating around too.

Cool! thanks for the info
If either of you turn one up, please let me know and how much you want for it. It's one of those odd bits that I need to put the car back together and haven't been able to find one yet. I made several calls to places I get parts from and nobody has one.

Action girl, I was in one of the speed shops the other day. They had spacers; made from PLYWOOD! NO, I'm not "pulling your leg!"
Apparently they cut down heat transfer.
If you used the broken spacer you have as a pattern, wouldn't be too hard to duplicate.
To get the right thickness, glue a couple of pieces on top of each other, then with a jig saw and a drill you should be able to make a replacement.

if for some reason none of these other helpful HAMBers work out, you can order them from ObsoleteChevy, FillingStation, etc.

I have one on the way courtesy of Rocket88... I did check Filling Station (I get lots of stuff from them) and they didn't have one. Not sure about obsolete chevy.

friend of mine has a 235 with the the carb stud broken. we were thnking of deleting the spacer to accomodate some sort of cob-job to mount the oil bath air cleaner with a modern element because the carb opening is soooo damned close to the hood. what happens when ya get rid of the spacer?

There's some stuff called phenolic that works great as a spacer. I'm not sure what it's made of, but it looks like a resin/fiberglass type of material. As far as where to find it, you'd have to search the net, I usta get it from a place I worked. Probably MSC or Grainger sells it.
just FYI
Phenolic sheet is a hard, dense material made by applying heat and pressure to layers of paper or glass cloth impregnated with synthetic resin. These layers of laminations are usually of cellulose paper, cotton fabrics, synthetic yarn fabrics, glass fabrics or unwoven fabrics. When heat and pressure are applied to the layers, a chemical reaction (polymerization) transforms the layers into a high-pressure thermosetting industrial laminated plastic.
