A really good friend of mine has a 62 SS with a 3 speed and he wants a 4 speed. Being a Ford guy I assume this car would have come with a Muncie is this correct? are all Muncies the same? Length, shifter location other factors? Is there a buldge in the floor for shiftr clearence? And finally does anybody have a tranny they would like to sell? Thanks for the help guys

The 62s were originally equipped with a Borg-Warner 4 speed and the flimzy shifter that came with it. They all came up through a console in the Super Sports, I really don't remember how the bubble top Belairs were configured.

BelAirs had a curved handle that fit the form of the bench seat.

Often called a "dog leg shifter" btw... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Got any more pics of that car?

I don't know what kind of restoration this guy is doing, but I would strongly recommend a Hurst shifter handle over one of those pencil shifters, especially if he drives it like he means it. Here's a pic and a part #.

The resto is 95% complete, now he's entertaining the 4 speed idea. More my idea than his. Why even build an SS without 4-speed!

Without a doubt, competition plus Hurst shifter. His car has bucket seats and a console, but not a floor shift console.

I think '64 was first year for Muncie. I have a 2.56 low Muncie out of a '64 that I got in a trade but shipping would be expensive. Usually plentiful @ swap meets, go for around $400 to $450 around here.
