Here's a cool item I snagged this weekend: "Veda Orr's New Revised Hot Rod Pictorial: featuring time trials of 1946, 1947, and 1948." Set me back a couple of bucks...

Inside cover is a pic of Regg Slemmer's roadster; here's a 1946 picture of SCTA officers. Wally Parks is bottom left.

Here's a page on Stu Hillborn's wacky new "fuel injected" lakester...

Book contains a whole series of illustrations by Dick Teague... How about one of these for the next HAMB shirt?

Of course, lots of track shots from Rosamond, Muroc, El Mirage. The caption here reads:

Mike, would love to see more on Stu Hilbourn's roadster, was only reading up about it last night.

Any chance of emailing me some scams of the photo?

Great score regardless.

Cheers,

That book is incredible...

And the shirt idea rocks, just keep it simple, put HAMB on it somewhere and DONT FAG IT UP with a bunch of extra writing and bullshit...

I have a copy of that book, also. There are a lot of great drawings of modifieds by Teague throughout.

The photo of the club officers always reminds me that in the late '40's, there were many parts of the country where blacks would not have been included in many activities with whites. In this case, the guy next to Parks is the treasurer. Viva la Hot Rods!

Funny story about the book - I found it at the vintage races at Road America last weekend, sitting in a pile of old books about Ferrari, Lotus, etc.. I guess the sports car boys weren't that interested in real hot rod history.

Kinky - I noticed that too -- it's pretty amazing how "multicultural" the hot rod scene was back in the day; remember, this was about the same time that Jackie Robinson was breaking the baseball color barrier.

I'm planning to scan the whole book (about 50 pages), I'll post pics when done. As for the T-shirt thing, I'm assuming it'd be okay copyright-wise with SCTA and Dick Teague to lift his illustration for a HAMB shirt.

John - put me down for $20 of them HAMB stickers, I'll drop by with payment this week...

I bought a new copy of the Veda Orr book from the SCTA a couple of years ago. I don't see it at their site now, but it's probably worth a phone call: http://www.scta-bni.org/

zonkola - thanks! I'm pretty sure that the one I got is an original edition... paper is kind of thick newsprint, fairly yellowed; no edition or copyright notice in the front pages; publisher is Floyd Clymer ("Los Angeles, 6, California"); plus a printed-on-cover price of $1.50.
