I suppose, that yes, this is car related, ---I do post a lot of hotrod "how to" articles. Early this month I had to buy a new computer system, and I ended up getting one with a Vista operating system. I downloaded my faithfull old "image resizer" from Microsofts "free stuff" page (Microsoft Powertoys), and damn---got a pop-up saying it is not compatible with Vista!!! I really liked it, because once downloaded, you didn't have to do anything except right click on the picture you wanted to resize, and it gave you the choice of "small, medium, or large!---one click and it was done. Does anybody know of a comparable free software download that Vista can handle?---Brian

I think that "photobucket" is a site that hosts your pictures---as in "stores them on its website"--(I could have that wrong). I'm looking for one that lets me downsize my own pictures that are saved on my hard-drive, from my digital camera, so I can downsize them to a size that lets me post them on the internet.---Brian

oooh, for tha I use photoshop, but its not as easy as "small medium or large" and its not free...have you tried a google search "free image resizer software" or something like that .... www.downloads.com (http://www.downloads.com) might have something that you could use, sorry i wasn't much more help than that

Go into your picture file, right click on the desired picture, scroll down to "open with," and select "paint," When the picture comes up in paint, click "image," and the select "resize/skew.."
You can resize the picture vertically and horizontally. Make sure to do both the same, or it distorts your picture. Find the desired size, and post away.
I found that to be the easiest way, without using a picture host.

Yes, your right---I had forgotten about that. It seems though, that first I have to guess at what percentage I want to reduce it by, then reduce it, then query it to see how big the image is since I reduced it, and if its still too big then I have to reduce it more, or if its too small then I'm in the shit, because I can't "unshrink" it, and it didn't make a copy of the original, and now I'm stuck!!!---Maybe I'm just a computer klutz, but I like a program that tells you beforehand what size you are going to get, and automatically makes the reduced image size a copy and gives it a different name, just in case I screw up.

I know exactly what you mean. So far, I haven't found anything that does that. But, I'm using VSO Image Resizer right now until something better comes along....

This doesn't work with Vista. I have this on my desktop with XP but have Vista on my notebook and would love to be able to do this. The thing I like is that you can keep your original photo the size it was and just add another pic to your folder. I'm still looking.

Like I said, try this one---it keeps your original the same size and makes a changed copy, and it tells you what size you are changing to.

I use Paint.Net
http://www.getpaint.net/download.html
It's free. It works (for me anyway).
It has many features like Photoshop except the price. ;)
When you save a file you have the chance to set the size or you can resize any time.
I'll try vso too. Thanks.

Damn---Every day is a voyage of discovery with Vista. I started to use computers 10 years ago, and over the years I have become very adept with Windows XP. I was forced to buy a new computer because my 6 year old Hewlett Packard box was simply running out of "steam" to run my engineering software (Solidworks). I thought "before I load my 2008 Solidworks (which is even larger than last years version), I'd better buy a new computer"---and of course, if you deal at Future Shop and buy an "over the counter" computer like I did, rather than have a new computer custom built, you get Vista as an operating system. I don't hate Vista, (as a lot of people seem to), but every friggin' thing I go to do is different. My digital camera reacts totally different----my photo resizing software doesn't work on Vista (which prompted this thread). My ancient copy of Autocad 14 wouldn't work on Vista, untill I was able to download some "tweaks" from the net to make it work. Solidworks DWGgateway didn't work, untill I went to the Solidworks website and downloaded some special "Tweaks" to use with Vista. Just about every damn thing I go to do now doesn't work, needs special "tweaks" to make it work, or requires that I download some kind of "patch" to make it work. Even in Solidworks my icons are bitched up (the Solidworks tech people say they are working on that), and my preview function no longer works.---I could have copped out and had a computer custom built and loaded with XP as an operating system, but if Vista is the future, I didn't want to spend $1800 on an operating system that will be "yesterday" in 2 years time. Meanwhile, I'll just keep learning and "tweaking" till everything works the way its supposed to.

As an IT professional, college instructor in the IT dept. (13 campuses in our 'little' college and we are waiting before rolling out Vista on our production systems) and a computer geek since the 70s.... I'll wait to see if it "improves".
My first year students who bought new systems with Vista on them wound up going back to XP so they could get their work done.
In case Bill Gates is listening.. I'll say, "It sure looks purty. Good luck".

I feel your pain with Vista......Just got a new laptop at work, problems with AutoCAD, Office2007 sucks, Vista won't work with our servers correctly....
I'm about 2 temper-tantrums away from burning this bitch down and loading XP.
I'd like to crawl through this Internet connection and choke Bill Gates.

I really, really, hope that Vista is about improvements in performance, and not just different for the sake of being different, and lining Bill Gates pockets. It is very frustrating, but I am doing my best to find my way through this damn mess.-And really, I haven't found anything it just out and out won't or can't do----but my old bald head is losing more hair every day as I try to figure out what in Hell I have to do to make Vista do the things that XP did and without me f#$^ing with it for 20 minutes every time.

Sorry Brian but improving performance with Vista requires MUCH more processing power than before. Nearly 1 gig RAM to run the OS alone.
Oh! You want to run an application too? Better have more RAM!
2 Gigs on XP = 4+ on Vista.
Learn how to turn off all the pretty stuff and you will get a little speed back.
There is a service pack due out but they are having trouble with it. Surprise.
Frankly... we all need to go back to an Abacus. ;)

I haven't had any problems with processing spped at this point. I did go and buy a copy of "Windows Vista for Dummies" and it says that if you would like more processing speed to "click on Computer on the Start menu----choose Properties----select Advanced System Settings from the task pane on the left----Click the Settings button in thePerformance section---choose Adjust For Best Performance-----click OK.----This turns off the Aero Glass and all the fancy shit, and speeds things up dramatically----or at least thats what the book says.

That was true with XP as well.
Check out http://www.petri.co.il/tweaking_window_vista_performance.htm
for a few more tips but you are lucky if performance is good.
The issues the students had was functionality, not performance.
They just didn't have time to learn the material they were being taught AND learn how to fuss with the OS to make it run their apps too.

This is an interesting wiki about what users have found about compatability with apps.

i just tried this and it didn't seem to speed up anything and actually changes the apperience alot. dont really need anything faster , but hey we are hot rodders right?i too have just bought a new desk top with vista and it has takin alot of time. xp on the lap top. xp much more user friendly.

You want to see hotrod speed? if you have apps that will run off of Windows 98 you would freak on the new computers.
We ran 98 on a new system. Freakin amazing.
Not really a helpful idea but.. it is "traditional". ;)
Sorry... couldn't resist.

Thats my finding.---Its not the functionality, because if you can hunt and peck around untill you find the right path, it generally seems to work okay. Of course, like all things, once I've been using Vista exclusively for a couple of months, I will have forgotten how XP worked. Thats okay for me---I'm self employed and work from home on a dedicated computer---but I can see how it would get ugly quick for a student trying to keep up, learn new things every day, AND fight their way around Vista trying to run their applications.

That and a lot of the training software wouldn't run on Vista. So that really messed them (and me) up.
Some of us put so much of our lives on these things. We need to be more carefull of how we use them.
An upgrade is rarely immediate gratification.

And may I be so bold as to STRONGLY suggest you test your backup routine/software/methods if you run your business from the new system?
It's been an issue for some. Not many, but it sure is important.
Also, if you have USB memory sticks PLEASE get in the habit of doing a proper "eject" of the device instead of just pulling it out when done.
It's like someone saying, "I've been doing that for years. Never hurt before". I've been doing too much data recovery on those things lately for people who never had any trouble before.
Whew... there's a rant out. Sorry, but I feel better. ;)

Yes, I do run my business from this one computer. That doesn't involve a lot. I design automation and prototype machinery for industry, and create back up/archive files of my stuff by burning a CD on a weekly basis. I couldn't afford to lose a weeks work, but then again, the immense pain in the arse created by having to create a back up CD every night is more agravation than I can bear.

I dump stuff to a USB stick in between "proper" backups.
Actually, I'm one of the few techies who probably backup their own systems. ;)
By the way.. I actually worked on my truck today too!
Had to put that in since we are on the HAMB. ;)
Put the first coat of primer on the beast. Well... just the tailgate.
I'm attempting to gather parts and pieces of a 30/31 A truck.
Doing electrolysis to get rid of the rust. Don't care much for sand blasting and don't have the $$ to get someone to do a softer media blasting.
Not much for old tin to choose from this far east.

What " Vista" system do you have exactly? There are dozens available.
I have 'Vista home basic' Known to those in certain circles as 'FISTA'
if your's is remotely similar to what I have ,you Must have Windows picture manager. It's a reasonable system which allows you to resize Up or down any image type including MOV.if you resize down too far you can simply undo it.'
It's far more flexible than photobucket's '3 size ' arrangement.
Have a good look at 'Pictures gallery'and you should find both paint and pictures manager.
Vista is OK if remove the phishing filter and delete most of the automatic updates, some of which are bogus and slow the whole thing down enormously.
I have also turned off the automatic update feature until someone tells me I can it run without jamming the friggen thing.
