When I wheel my old 41 pontiac to the HAMB drags next month, I don't want it to look as bad as it does now. The car was painted with basecoat/clearcoat some years ago and some idiot parked it where goats could climb on it. Yeah, real goats with hooves and everything. They gouged the shit outa the paint while playing king of the Poncho. It gets worse. Now, the clearcoat is coming off the fender tops and the hood. Ive already tried buffing the paint with an aggressive compound but the scratches are very deep....buffing didn't do a thing. Whata should I do with this for a short-term solution? Should I scuff, mask and shoot it with a clearcoat with flattening agent mixed in? I don't have enough time to strip and reshoot it before the drags....
Maybe I should just leave it as-is and not worry about it this year? What's a quick-fix that doesn't need to be permanent? Look at these scratches and shit!

Need some close-up pic of damage. You may if, the clear is thick enough, wet sand and attempt to buff again. But if the damage is into the base, in large area's... a quick redo, or DP-90 till a more complete repair/paint job.

Strpe it, each individual scratch.. Or spiderweb it. Or just drive real freakin fast on your way to MOKAN so that the wind resistance heats up the paint & sorta melts it all together.
Oh yeah, bring the goat. Texas boys will bbq it.
Just bring your car as it is.

Just drive the fucker! Like you are one to worry about finish?????!!!!!! You will get the "ROCKY STANCE" and nail it hard, paint is secondary.

Exactly what I was thinkin'. They make waxes in different colors, for just this purpose...seems like black would be easy enough to find. maybe the local paint and body supply house?

I would just leave it. Anything you do in the short-term will just compound the time needed to get it the way you really want it. That car looks so cool even all scratched up, and it makes for a good story! Nice car.

Butt, I know the commercial are hokey-as-hell, but I think something along those lines would work. We have a wood polish, that is similar, that we use for the paneling in our house...hides the scratches really well! Seems like less cost and less labor for a quickie fix. Or...just get some enamel and a soft, wide brush and paint it...if you do it right, you'll have a really smooth finish. I've seen pics of old sign trucks done like that. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The ol' colored wax trick, eh? Well, I got nuthin to lose. I'll score a can and see what-up.
In the areas where the clearcoat is coming off, there's a milky area at the edge of dis-attachment...I think I'll try sanding this area to remove the milky part. I'm assuming the milky look is caused by air getting between the base and clear coats. Ordinarily, I wouldn't care about it but I don't want my car to look like shit. It's really a pretty decent car and it's truly embarassing to see this damaged paint. I'd rather see it with primer spots than big ol' milky spots and deep gouges in the paint.
Thanks all for the advice.....

I would scuff it and go a satin finish...
Then I would go back to the farm w/ the goats w/ an M-60 and blow them all away. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif and the dope who parked it there in the first place.

The only problem is, if he shows up with the car like that and tells people "Some old goat did it", they're gonna think he vandalized his own car!

Hey Kustombuilder, wife is going to be with me, otherwise could find a good use for the goat. Hmmmm, 30Roadster is going to be by himself!
15 yrs ago got my kids a baby "easter goat" instead of another rabbit. Mother in law lived about 200 yds from us then, had a new ford truck. Goat ran loose, would go to her house get on top of the truck. She would chase it away with a broom. Goat saw where she kept the broom, stole it brought it to our house. Smart buggers!
Rocky, drive through a rainstorm, get the car dirty, it would look the Jake Jacobs & companys cars did @ Roundup this year! We were all impressed!

I would either wet sand it with 1200 or 1500 all the way around, OR depending on what your later plans are, you could scuff it with a gray or red scotch brite. Wet sanding it with the lighter grade paper you could possibly uniform all or most of the scratches and buff a pretty good looking shine. However, with it being black, I believe if you got a shine back it will show of every little hoof dent. I agree, striping the car would do an amazing amount of cosmetic change to it.
Hell, scuff it and stripe it.

Thanks, Rev....amazingly enough, the car doesn't have one single hoof dent in it....just deep scratches. I can picture the little critters getting their hooves wet with goat pee and rain water,,,tracking through the goat-yard and making it muddy as hell, then leaping up on the car, scrambling with muddy, gravelly hooves up the back, standing on the belt line stainless, head butting each other on the hood and front fenders...they even scratched the glass!..Jesus! Make the pictures stop!

I agree with the Rev. Use a scotchbrite pad and scuff it. It won't get rid of any deep scratches, but should give a nice satin finish.

Ya might try giving it a serious scuffing enough to do away with the bulk of the scratches, then blow a couple of coats of clear over it, then wet sand a clear it again.
If I was going to blow clear with flattener in it I would mix it pretty light and shoot for a satin rather than a black. The it will look like its covered with dew all the time and should really glisten in the sun.
Ah Hell Rocky I'm probably not even going to wash the '65 unless it rains, just park it next to me. No one will even notice the scratches. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I fucking HATE goats! Little bastards are good for nothing. Never had a problem with grampa's Daisy, the nanny goat. Course, she was twelve hundred years old. But the little billy goat was a fucker. He just pissed on himself all the time and butted into anything that moved. I still remember him ramming me into my Chevy Luv door. Damn thing never shut right after that. Did I mention I fucking HATE goats?! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Anyway, I wouldn't worry about the paint. Just show up and have fun.
