I'm putting in a Saginaw 4-speed in my 54 Chevy. I am running a Turbo 350 right know and have used the adapter for the dual master cylinder. Does anyone have the original pedal mount so I can get the measurements? Also I'm trying to mount the shifter for the trans and there are no bolt holes on the tailshaft like a muncie, just a plate with 3 hole in it. How or what did this mount to? Or is this the right shifter, all the rods and tabs line-up and the indentation seems to match the shifter mounting plate. All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tim

That trans was in a 67-68 Camaro and I think the shifter mounted to the crossmember.

I will look at my GMC and see how the shifter mounts. I can't remember back that far http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

BTW, the bellhousing looks good with the polished ribs

Yorgatron, That would be great, where does it bolt on the tranny? I'll PM you with my numbers and maybe we can do it with measurements and photos. Neal did you have to modify the shifter in your truck for the bench seat? Was this out of Pauls Camaro?

Thanks for the help.

on the sginaw i've got the hurst uses a plate that mounts to the 2 left side tail housing bolts and has a clamp that goes around the end at the outside of the seal area. mostly flat plate but a couple of bends in it.

should be easy to duplicate with one for a pattern.

Tim -

I just looked at the Saginaw in my GMC. The shifter bolts to three holes on the left side of the tailshaft, right behind the speedo drive. It looks like there is a flat spot on yours, but no bolt holes. I guess not all Saginaws were created equal...

If I remember right, we heated my shifter and bent it up straight. It just clears the seat in 2nd and 4th.

I am now kind of wondering about the shifter you have. That transmission came from a friend of Paul's. He took it out of a Camaro and replaced it with a Muncie. Paul bought the trans and shifter for his Model A project. Since the shifter says Muncie on the handle, I wonder if the guy kept his old shifter in the Camaro and swapped out the rods, so you enede up with a Muncie shifter with Saginaw rods? Just a guess.

I bet your right Neal, Muncie shifter and Saginaw rods.I think I can make a bracket that uses the tailshaft bolts for a mounting point, or I think I will have to make a new cross member out of hat channel. If I do this I will use the holes on the shifter mount. I am going to take out the pedal mount and start fabbin' up the clutch linkage.

Thanks,
Tim

Most of those shifters mounted to the floor or cross member as mentioned. Shifters are available but access to the speedo drive is tricky as it is under the shifter plate on some.

Is the plate factory or aftermarket?

Thanks, Tim

TERPU-

I have a Saginaw with and aftermarket shifter (Mr.Gasket). The shifter assembly bolts onto a mounting plate (which fastens to the very back of the tailshaft with a big U-bolt affair (sort of like a muffler clamp).

I don't know what all parts you may have, but why not just pop for an afermarket shifter? Then you get all the right parts, in good working order - and a lot higher quality all around. The factory stuff I've seen - and used - is pretty much junk in comparison - IMHO anyway.

Also, do you know you can determine the tranny's gear ratios (there are 4 versions) by checking the number of "rings" on the input shaft. PM me if you're interested and I'll give you the "code" info (as passed on to me several months back, right here on the HAMB).
