Here is a 4 foot Tiki that I carved for my daughters birthday party. Its out of a pink polystyrene sheet fron home depot.

I cut the sheet into 6 pieces and glued it together then carved it in rough with a hack saw.

All of the fine tuning was done with an electric turkey knife that you can pick up for about $6 after turkey-day.

It was then covered in a secret mix of paper machae' (sp?).

1 bomb of primer - 1 bomb of dark brown- 1 bomb of cream and walaa! Instant Tiki for a 2 year old daughters birthday.

The paper machae(sp) would stop the solvents in the paint from eating the foam.
Brilliant.
And not too expensive.

Really cool stuff, everyone!

KC...that tiki RULES! Ass for the paint/foam melting dilema...if you use "Design Masters" brand spray paint, you won't have any reaction problems. It costs a buck or two more, but it's worth it on the labor saved! Michaels and Hobby lobby and flower shops usually carry it. Anyways...that tiki RULES! Did I alreaddy say that? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif If I can get some free time and cash, I'm gonna have to try to make one!

The next step is to glass this one in the marine epoxy resin. Hit it with a little HOK flake in a dark bronze metalic paint some satin clear and a lot of pinstriping! But I have to fundraise some money for that! So in the mean time I have 3 more to do. Maybe if I am feeling pretty http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif I will do a mini tech post of the process. The cool thing is that right now it weighs about 20 lbs and with glass and paint it should only be around 30 -40 lbs tops!

regular old elmer's glue or wood glue works too. my brother sculpted car bodies when he was in college for industrial design. used foam, and sometimes used that glue to seal the foam. pretty low buck, but it works.

Just got back from where a friend merc is getting built. I have posted some pics of it on this post a couple weeks ago, but when we walked into the shop this week, HOLY SHIT ANOTHER MERC!
This thing looks just plain sinister, a lot of tricks in it, but is getting built pretty hi-tech. Straight gas(propane) powered 460 Ford with a whole lot of billet shit bolted on. Its getting built as a modern car, and should ride like one too, with a late model (70's Holden) subframe graft. The Bare metal merc's airbag system is fitted, the car drops as fast as it's weight will let it, pretty cool.
Got plenty of pics, but the black merc was a BITCH to take photos of, especially since it was dark, with only the fluro shop lights.

They use almost the same stuff on surfboards. Boat hulls, and model boats shaped out of polystyrene. Most of the new ground effects kits are sculpted out of a foam then glassed to make a mold. I had a long talk with the local boaters supply about it. Most resins contain a styrene derivitive or a xylene of some sorts but the marine epoxy resins are formulated for styrofoams.
