The Rodder’s Journal supports the H.A.M.B.
Hey guys at the h.a.m.b.
At long last we have gotten off our butts and joined the board!
For a long time we’ve been lurking around here, reading your posts, enjoying your build-ups, laughing at your in-jokes and wisecracks at each other and have noticed your continued support of Ryan and his board.
We have also noticed that The Rodder’s Journal has been mentioned on here quite a bit and after talking with Ryan thought we could help somehow.
So, what we’d like to do is have an auction four times a year for a 1-year subscription to TRJ. The money goes to Ryan for the board; you guys get the current issue mailed at the end of the auction and three more as they come out after that. You’ll also get the free holiday poster that all subscribers get.
We probably wont be posting a whole lot, as we have a crazy schedule getting these magazines out, but if you want to ask questions or anything, feel free and we will try to respond.
On another note I thought I would mention that we goofed in our December Rod and Custom ad!! If you do want to call us the correct numbers are.
PH: (650) 246-8920
FX: (650) 246-8927
Cheers!

I'm not going to lie - when TRJ sent me an email about all of this, I giggled like a little girl. I remember when TRJ first came out... I couldn't hardly believe my eyes. Being into art direction and hot rods like I am and seeing both integrated so flawlessly really left it's mark with me. To have them support something that we do just blows me over. I'm stoked to say the least.

I devour TRJ like a kid in a kandy store....Invaluable reference and an education each issue...btw,TRJ guys, it is customary for a publication to feature a pictorial on the first HAMB artist to respond to their intro....it's true.

Welcome aboard, glad to see ya out of the closet. As you already know, lots of friendly, knowledgeable folks around these parts.
Just to let you know, the intro police like to hear about what you drive, what projects your working on, age, material statis, etc, and of course, you must include photos http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

WOW! We got TRJ not only talking to us but actually participating with an auction? Then, there's the post about a guy testing the waters for a 40's style car movie? Shazam! We are getting respectable in our old age, eh? It's all too weird.
When is the magazine auction gonna begin? It's about time I took part in this big ol magazine.

Usually we roast a guy if he doesn't show pictures of his car on the first post... but since you guys show us pictures of cars on a regular basis. via TRJ... I guess we can let you slide. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
That and you've offered to help Ryan out... which is way cool of you.
And keep the Brizio cars coming... (I'm a Bay Area dude too)... I hear he's restoring (or has) Tom McMullen's Roadster for some pea-rancher down in Beverly Hills...
Also, what ever happened to the idea of covering the first annual HAMB Drags?? I hear there are a couple of guys putting together some "antiqued" pics of the event for you guys...

TRJ really blew my mind when it first came out and the quality has really kept up- welcome aboard. The support for Ryan is really cool. Since you are here, one thing. . .

TRJ SUCKS!!! I hate that rag!! I buy every issue and can't even read it!! I don't want to get fingerprints on the cover and don't want to break the spine by opening it wide. Why can't you print it on cheap paper like other magazines. Also, you shouldn't hang around with us lowlifes. It's gonna' kill your circulation when the goldchainers find out. You know.....the old "guilt by association" thing? (unless you can all keep a secret)
hope you realize that I'm kidding.....you do the "Pebble Beach" of automotive publications. Thanks SO much!

Wow, that's great news. Welcome to the HAMB. I have been a subscriber to TRJ since the very beginning and can honestly say "IT IS THE BEST." I save a special spot in my library for every issue and even buy a second at B & N to get the alternate cover. I just wish that Pat Ganahl would somehow find his way back into covering all the historical things that have happened along the way to the hot rod family. I especially liked his stories of the buildings that were occupied by the early shops in the LA area and what's now in their place. Again, welcome Steve and staff!

Its great that Ryan is getting the support he means as well as the recognition for putting together the best Message Board on the Web plus all the time he puts in keeping it up and running without problems...
As for TRJ, I was at Brizio's two weeks ago and there was the Eldebrock Special 32,,, you got a feature coming up soon on that one.. WOW what a car...
So start a new post for the auction and what the support roll in.... Thanks for a great mag...

First: Welcome
Second: Work on lowering the price of your mag!
Many folks here are building traditional hot rods based on PASSION and very LITTLE MONEY. On the surface, this seems a bit like the gold chain check writing dude writing his/her 6 figure check for an ol’ skool rod instead of a billet bomb.
I know there’re folks with money who have a passion for traditional rods as much as the next guy. Here’s my point: I would hate seeing the ingenious DIY and lowbuck solutions take a back seat to glossy photography of a rod with a 50 history that can ONLY be purchased for 6-figures.
side valve, I think TRJ is worth MORE than it's cover price. It's the best damn book ever produced.
But TRJ you'd better sleep with one eye open because Ol Skool Rodz is nipping at your tails.
Welcome Coonan et al.
And yeah I do miss Ganhal.

The intro was tainted with "buying" this crowd (and there's nothing wrong with that), however, I think a true intro is needed...
FWIW, I'll extend a pre-intro welcome to the House of HAMB...BTW, I'm missing issue Number Three of my very complete collection...and I have an extra Number Thirteen I'll let go...

Apples to oranges. I leaf through the other mags for a week or so, rip out any ads or articles I want and trash them. I'm forced to call TRJ a coffee table book and keep it around unmolested. Although I have not seen Rodz on a newsstand in the SE yet.
side valve, now you're pissing me off. I was being sarcastic, fool. I'm glad we have Ol' Skool Rodz, but the writing in it is the most immature and juvenile I've ever read. I'll buy it anyway, just like I buy The Horse.
And IMHO The Horse is the same. It's a mere shadow of it's former self. Bring back Snow, he was a great writer.
Like I said there's room for both, and I buy them both.
But TRJ is heads above anything that came before or anything that's likely ever to come.
Surely you can buy one less pack of chewing tobacco a week, side valve, and pony up the $12.95 for a TRJ every other month?

last night when I first replied to this post I thought a few of you might be pissed at me but I guess thats not the case.
Nads is right, the publication is on its own planet as far as quality
BUT, BUT, But, I dont need to know what Eric Clapton is having someone build him every fucking issue. What's Brizio building for Kid Rock next issue Steve? Two pullouts of fake hotrods is well..... where is Pat? The blue roadster pickup doesnt have one Ford part on it, not one! There is a whole nation of cool cars out there guys, we all pay you fifty bucks a year to go find them.
I'm glad they are helping the HAMB out but we all know Steve aint reading our posts about the best Punk bands. Their post was signed TRJ, which means publicity department, not Steve Coonan. Goebbels, not Hitler.

TRJ is great........
I bid $75.00 But I did not see a deadline for the auction......when is it?
Unlike some of the rest..........I do not ask for the return of Pat G.
He was good and I enjoyed his articles. I believe Joe Kress and Coonan know whats best for TRJ. Sometimes it is best to change the staff chemistry and get a different view or opinion. This is NOT a slam of PG.
I would enjoy seeing articles by AV8........Mike Bishop.
He is a good writer and knows old school rods. He hangs with Vern Tardel so he would have a great source of stories and inspiration. Have Joe Kress call him........

Certainly can't fault Pat Ganahl for his years as the king editor of TRJ, preceded by his stewardship of R&C through some of its very finest years. Pat is an outstanding historian and meticulous in his craft. When he left R&C the magazine spun down under the hand of a dull and incompetent editor.
The magazine is a bit better now than it was undet the former stewardship, but it's still very much a lightweight.

Glad to hear from you and welcome. I consider TRJ about the coolest book there is.Outstanding taste most of the time.I only have one problem with TRJ and that is I dont like to go to the okland roadster show or any ware else and see it for sale befor I see mine in my mail box.Dont you think your sudscribers should come first?
hi again, thanks! im glad you like the idea of us supporting the hamb and ryan! and thanks again for all the great comments, good and bad.
i guess there is some clarification that needs to be addressed.
this is actually US! the rodders journal. my name is geoff miles, i am the editorial asociate at trj. it is a collaborative effort that does include steve and our art director suzi. but, i have set it up so that anyone from trj can come on and post or answer a question or go the wisecrack! as i stated before we are seriously busy, but we are going to make an effort to be more a part of this board. please have some patience.
yes, there will be an auction! all money will go to ryan. we are actually printing the new issue as i type this - i mean literally! i think some of you will be pleasantly suprised at some of the new issues offerings! as soon as i have a page ready we will begin. im thinking a 2 week auction, but you tell me what you think is fair. sorry to those who already had a stab, hope you will go again.
i will at times give you an update on how things are here at trj, how we are progressing with new stuff, but, i am also going to be showing releases in our spotlight section for the hamb, calanders etcetera. not every single one, but often. we have had discussions about features with ryan and a lot of cool ideas are coming... we dont like to give too much away though.
as far as our cars go... well i will try to muster up som photos, but it wopnt be for a while... printing and all.
steve coonan had one of the baddest '32 roadsters ever. he sold it to start the magazine. he now has a '65 riviera. he has plans for another roadster, but right now its time to work on magazines.
suzi hutsell our art director has a super clean '63 falcon hardtop.
senior editors joe kress and greg sharp both have bitchen hot rods, that i am sure you are all familiar with.
senior contributing editors jay fitzhugh has a very nice '32 three window in progress, look for it soon. ken gross, well, do i need to explain his car to you? i hope not!
i am in the throws of a '29 on deuce rails, if i clutter up my cubical with much more crap, steve will punt me out into the studio to work on the floor!
thats longwinded, but i hope it answers some questions... and its all i can type!
cheers

Your mag has a VERY special place in my library!
THANX and WELCOME.

I've been approached by a lot of magazines in the past wanting to hook up with the HAMB for a ton of different reasons. In some cases, there were good ideas that would have been pretty cool but I never went through with it because I was scared of the commercial implications, spam, etc...
TRJ is just different. The whole idea of the magazine fits well with the whole idea of the HAMB. And this isn't a money deal in the least. TRJ is supporting the HAMB and we are doing the same for TRJ by giving them whatever exposure we can. I'm just tickled shitless about this deal...
Now as far as mags go, what are my favorites? Easy.
Hop Up.
Mark Morton has been a major influence on me and his mag is tops. Very few things get me more excited than getting a new issue in the mail.
Rod N Custom.
Lots of bullshit to weed through (necessary from a $$ standpoint I'm sure), but I think lately it has been very good. I really think this mag is going places. How can you go wrong with this month's cover? My three favorite cars... EVER.
Custom Rodder.
The best editor on the planet. I like this mag for it's punk rock values. Fuck you, I like big wheels on early 60s chevies...
TRJ.
It's obvious, ain't it?

Just had to chime in here.TRJ is the most bitchen mag out there, no question. When I get my a new issue I have to read it little bits at a time........to make it last as long as possible.
That would be my ONLY complaint.......does not come out often enough, but I certainly understand the reality of publishing such a quality piece, it just can't get slammed out.
Keep up the great work and welcome.

I know what you mean, but you can always do what I do. I normally read it cover to cover as soon as I get it, usually on the bus (NOT the short bus) on the way to work.
In those long, lonely months between issues, I pull out the back issues (I've got every issue) and read them again. I find that there's so much info in there, that I keep finding new stuff... or it could be that I just don't remember shit! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
In fact, this morning I pulled out #4, the issue with the feature on "Job One", the Harry Bentley Bradley designed '47 Ford. I just love the way they did the sketches on the tracing paper stuff. TRJ could've just printed them onto normal stock, but NO, they go and make life extremely difficult for themselves (I imagine) and print it so that it looks like you're holding the actual pencil sketches that HBB did. TOO COOL!
Did I mention there's a photo of me in #23. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
